Joan Estelle Schroeder, 71, of Merrill, died Thursday, September 4, 2003, at Community Health Care Wausau Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 6, 1932, in Aurora, Ill., Joan was the daughter of Emil and Bessie Bodwell Pischel. She married Louis J. Schroeder on June 20, 1953, in West Chicago, Ill.

Joan raised seven children with her husband Louis. She was an auxiliary volunteer at Good Samaritan Health Center, a Merrill School District handicapped bus monitor and an active member of St. Francis Parish. Joan enjoyed cross stitching, crafting, shopping, bird watching and was an avid cruciverbalist. She especially enjoyed travel and spending with her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Louis; sons Joe (Carol), Mesa, Ariz.; John (Yamile), Lake Zurich, Ill.; Edward (Kathryn), Loveland, Colo.; Michael (Bonnie), New Lenox, Ill; Steve (Kathy), Chicago, Ill.; and Dave (Becky) Denver, Colo.; daughter Mary (Dean) Ritzmann, Peotone, Ill.; and 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Emil Pischel, Golden, Colo.; and Francis Pischel, Charlotte, N. C.; sister Mary Paulos, Chicago, Ill.; sister-in-law Jeannine Beaulier, Kenosha; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son Christopher Peter.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 6, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. James Horath officiated. Burial was in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UW Cancer Center Care of Wausau Hospital or the St. Francis School Student Grant Program.
