---Wuestewald, Sister Joseph Marie (6 Jan. 1910 – 1 Oct. 2004)

Sister Joseph Marie Wuestewald, 94, of Merrill, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, under the care of Comfort Care and Hospice Services and the Bell Tower Residence staff.

Born in Fordyce, Neb., on January 6, 1910, Sr. Joseph Marie was the daughter of the late Anton and Ann Hegge Wuestewald.

Sr. Joseph Marie joined the Holy Cross Sisters in Merrill in 1946. She took her first vows in 1948. Sr. Jo’s first ministry was at the Hessoun Orphanage in Fenton, Mo., where she cared for the young boys. She later did housekeeping and cooking in Merrill, Antigo, Rhinelander, and at Holy Cross Hospital and Bell Tower Reside4nce where she helped in the kitchen and with the sewing. Sr. Jo enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, and being the ‘life of the party’ ….some of which she started.

Surviving is a brother Peter (Edna) Wuestewald, Wessington, S. D. She was preceded in death by a brother John Wuestewald and sister Bertha Hanley.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, October 4, at Bell Tower Residence, Holy Cross Chapel, Merrill. Rev. Rollen Stencil officiated. Burial was in. St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, handled the arrangements.
