---Schmidt, George F. (10 Sept. 1911 – 16 Oct. 2004)

George F. Schmidt, of Merrill, born in the town of Pine River, Lincoln County, on September 10, 1911, son of the late Bernhard and Mary Schmidt of Pine River. George entered eternal life on Saturday morning, October 16, 2004, in the care of his family and the staff at Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill.

George worked as a yard foreman at Trantow Building Center in Merrill for 43 years. He then went back to work for the Lincoln House and retired again in January of 1997. He moved to Milwaukee in March of 1997, to live with his daughter and her family. George returned to Northern Wisconsin in 2001, to be with his sons and their families after his daughter’s passing. George was an avid fisherman for all his life. He loved to be outdoors and watch wildlife in his later years. He also loved to care for family pets and enjoyed sharing profound advice and stories from “the old days” to all his family and friends.

Survivors include his children Joanne Rowse, Spokane, Wash., Jerry (Judy) Schmidt, Tomahawk; Roland (Cathy) Schmidt, Coquille, Ore.; Barbara Chellberg, Spokane, Wash.; and Walter (Marilyn) Schmidt, Merrill; son-in-law Fritz Hoffmann, Milwaukee; grandchildren Debbie, Scott, Courtney, Shawn, Heather, Brenda, Eileen, Christine, Steven and Heidi; and 19 great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his daughter Georgia Hoffmann, one grandson, one great-grandson, and his siblings Lawrence, Walt, Marty, Ben, Herb, Goldie and Marie.

George will forever be missed.

Funeral services were Wednesday, October 20, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Rev. Earl Eckhart officiated. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Town of Pine River.
