Fred E. Harkner

Fred E. Harkner, 80, Merrill, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

He was born Jan. 28, 1924, to the late Joseph and Eva (Waldburger) Harkner in Merrill. He married Jeanette Krahn on April 14, 1945, in Merrill. She survives.

In his early high school years, Fred had a great interest in high school boxing. Later he became a longtime employee of Anson-Gilkey Company and owned and operated Harkner's Bait Shop. Fred loved his wife and family dearly. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially pontooning with all of his family and friends. Other interests were fishing, hunting, his dogs, music, dancing and building houses. Fred was very much loved by his family and close friends. He will have a special place in the hearts of those who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Harkner, Merrill; two sons, Fred J. (Bonnie Schmidt) Harkner and Robert (Joanne) Harkner, all of Merrill; four daughters, Shirley Klug and Judy (Dick) Henson, all of Merrill, Jan (Jim) Abbs, Wawaka, Ind., and Tammy (Bob) Hass, Merrill; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Goldie Anderson and Berdine (Don) Lutzke, all of Merrill; and one sister-in-law, Juanita Harkner, Merrill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Timothy Harkner; one granddaughter, Sarah Marie Henson; three brothers, Lavern, Floyd and Joseph Harkner; three sisters, Olive Harkner, Helen Harkner, Lena Munro; and one son-in-law, Daniel Klug.

Graveside committal services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Rev. James Horath will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Waid Funeral Home, Merrill.
