David Hinz

David Hinz, 39, died in hospice care in Williston, Vt., on Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 2005, following a 10-year battle with cancer.

David was born March 24, 1966, in Merrill, and graduated from Merrill High School in 1984. He received his bachelor's degree in history and German from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and later received his master's degree in German Literature and Culture Studies from Indiana University-Bloomington. He was employed by Seventh Generation, an environmental company, where he was an outspoken advocate for the environment and social justice. David also wrote a number of reviews for a newspaper called "Out in the Mountains," and in recent years, he took great satisfaction in working as a tour escort for choirs traveling in Europe.

While David enjoyed his adopted state of Vermont, where he lived since 1999, he took great pride for his native state of Wisconsin. Dave loved the outdoors, especially the lakes and forests of Wisconsin's Northwoods, and was proud of the progressive social and environmental legislation for which his native state is known. David enjoyed reading, writing and discussing politics and music. David once played the saxophone, flute, clarinet and piano. David was very active and also enjoyed lifting weights, hiking and biking. A lover of animals, David was a vegetarian.

David is survived by his parents, Donald and Marlene Hinz; a brother, Randy Hinz; sisters, Sandra Yorde and Debbie (Paul) Wagner; a niece, Taylor Belant; and three nephews, Andy, Matt and Mike Yorde. All are of Merrill. He is also survived by his best friends and soulmates, Brendon Briggs, Colchester, Vt., and Sylvia Hinz, Burlington, Vt.; and his beloved cat, Scout.

A private memorial service will be held in Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery.
