PLATTSBURGH — Florence Cottrell, 97, of Plattsburgh, died on July 4, 2006, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. Florence was born in Marquette County, Wisconsin, on Feb. 7, 1909, the daughter of John and Martha Summerton. She graduated from Oxford High School and attended Berrien Springs College (now Andrews University) in Michigan. She married Arba Barnabas "Barney" Cottrell on June 3, 1931. They lived and farmed near Irma, Wisc., until his death in November 1960.

In October 1965, she joined her daughter Fern and son-in-law Vinay Likhite in Plattsburgh to help care for their children. She was a skilled gardener and avid reader and she enjoyed learning about and collecting antique dishes and furniture. She returned to Wisconsin during summers to spend time with family and went almost every year in the late winter to California to visit family and friends there. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Plattsburgh.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons and their spouses, Dorothy and Jack Frohn of Oshkosh, Wisc., Fern and Vinay Likhite of Plattsburgh, Keith and Claudia Cottrell of Aurora, Ill., and Alson and Joy Cottrell of Santa Ana, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Tony and Alicia Likhite of Jericho, Vt., Edward Frohn and Magenta Griffith of Minneapolis, Minn., Jean Likhite and Brett Koehler of Keller, Texas, Joyce Frohn and Tony Hengst of Oshkosh, Wisc., Alec and Marisa Likhite of Arlington, Mass., Linda Cottrell and Roy Grutchfield of Witham, England, Keith David and Nicole Cottrell of West Bend, Wisc., Laurie Sue Cottrell and Tammy Lynn Cottrell of Santa Ana, Calif., Heidi and Mike Buckley of Aurora, Ill., Eric and Mary Henderschott of Darien, Ill., and Jay and Amy Henderschott of Naperville, Ill.; by 15 great-grandchildren, Maryel and Katherine Likhite, Bryce, Braden and Brianna Likhite-Koehler, Elizabeth Frohn Hengst, Ged and Hazel Likhite, Kiara Florence Grutchfield Cottrell, Nicole Wentworth, Lilly Belle Cottrell, Benjamin and Paige Buckley, Ryan Henderschott and Tyler John Henderschott, born July 11 and Ava Henderschott; by a sister-in-law, Marie Summerton; and by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Charles Summerton and Malcolm Summerton; her sisters, Margaret Cottrell and Ellinor Summerton; and her grandson, Keith Likhite.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 14, at R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15. Another memorial service will be held in Wisconsin in the fall, probably in November.

Donations in her memory may be given to the memorial fund at First Baptist Church.
