Alan Owens


Alan Owens, 57, of Merrill, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 18, 2006, at his residence.

Born in Winfield, Kan. on April 19, 1949, Alan was the son of Donald and Claudine Schmidt Owens. He married Karen Zimmerman on May 29, 1971, in Winfield, Kan.

Alan graduated from Oxford High School in Kansas in 1967. He attended Cowley Community College in Arkansas City, Kan. Alan worked for Winfield State Hospital in Winfield, Kan., until it closed in 1997. He then did volunteer work for William Newton Hospital in Winfield, and was honored as the volunteer of the year in 2004. Alan enjoyed watching movies, writing poetry, and especially spending time with his grandsons Codey and Nicholas.

Surviving are his wife Karen, Merrill; daughters Rebecca (Donald “Fritz”) Taylor Jr., and Wendy Jean Owens, both of Merrill; son Frank (Tracie), Winfield, Kan.; grandsons Codey and Nicholas; and his parents Donald and Claudine Owens, Oxford, Kan. Also surviving are brothers Ronald, Blackwell, Okla.; and Leslie, Oxford, Kan.; sister-in-law Sharon Zimmerman, Merrill; and brothers-in-law Richard Zimmerman, Madison; and Alan (Diane) Zimmerman, Merrill. He was preceded in death by brother Jimmie.

A prayer service will be tonight, Wednesday, June 21, 7 p.m., at the Waid Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. Brain Stolarczyk will officiate. Visitation will be this evening from 4 p.m. to the hour of services at the funeral home.
