Arnold H. Zemke

Arnold H. Zemke, 89, of 601 E. First St., Merrill, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at his home under Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

Arnold was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Polk County, Glenwood, Minn., to the late Wilhelm C. and Amalia Schmidt Zemke. He married Emily M. Pester on June 22, 1946, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. She survives.

In earlier years, Arnold worked on the family farm in the town of Scott. He had also worked for Ritter Lumber Company and Albrent Freight and Steffke before finding employment with the city of Merrill Water Department. Arnold retired in 1981 after 25 years of service to the Merrill community. Arnold was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. He was also a longtime active member of the Lincoln County Sports Club. Arnold loved hunting and going up north to their trailer at Patricia Lake Campground where he watched for wildlife like loons, deer and hummingbirds. Arnold also enjoyed spending time with his family and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Emily, Merrill; daughter Glynis (Mike) Schroeder, Merrill; son Scott, Merrill; and grandchildren Amanda Schroeder and Trevor Schroeder, both of Merrill. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Helena Kleinschmidt, Ida Baneck, Emilie Krause, Dorothea Oestreich, Anna Krause and Esther Krueger; and brothers Ernest, Paul, William, Hugo, Leo, Herbert and a brother in infancy.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 15, at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. Rev. Earl Eckhart officiated. Burial was in Snow Hill Cemetery, town of Scott. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ or the charity of your choice.
