Jacob Reist, 79, of 1002 N. Mill St., Merrill, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at his home.

Jacob was born Jan. 19, 1923, son of the late Alphonse and Anna (Baumgartner) Reist. He married Gertrude A. Wanless on June 14, 1947, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. Gertrude preceded him in death on March 18, 2001. Jacob was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill, and had been a former usher. Jacob was a member and recording secretary of the Merrill Social & Benevolent Society. He was a former member of the Merrill Labor Council, and was also a great secretary of the union at Hurd Millwork. Jacob enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Survivors include two daughters, Jorene (Rodney) Sabatke, and Sharon (Michael) Kleinschmidt, both of Merrill; one son, Gary (Joyce) Reist, Merrill; five grandchildren, Rev. Daniel (Denise) Seehafer, Horicon, Christine Seehafter, Minneapolis, Tina Reist, Merrill, David Reist, Cincinnati, and Tanya Kleinschmidt, Merrill; and one sister, Helen Giese, Marathon County. Jacob was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lester Seehafter.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. The Rev. Kenneth Albers will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and at the church on Tuesday starting at 9 a.m.
