The Hollanders of 1848 From the 1936 “Centennial Book of the St. John Congregation at Little Chute: A List of the “Forty-Eighters,” who came to Outagamie County in the year 1848 with Fr. Van den Broek from Holland. Fr. Theodore Van den Broek traveled to Holland in 1847 for a visit to his native land. While there he published a letter in a church circular that described the great opportunities for immigrants in the Fox River Valley where he lived. The Fox River Improvement company was building a system of locks and dams on the river, and desperately needed workers for the project. The company offered free transportation to any person living in a foreign land who would come to work on the project. Three ship loads of emigrants from Holland took advantage of the offer and came to the Fox River Valley. In 1848, three ships, the Maria Magdalena, the Libra, and the America brought a group of settlers to Outagamie County that became known as the "48ers."
