Chipman Family

Perry Chipman was on the Pendleton County, Kentucky tax list in 1817 through 1820, when that part of Pendleton County became Grant County. His will from Will Book A, Page 202, in Grant County, Kentucky list a wife Ann and the following children:
1. John Chipman whose estate sale was June 13, 1840
2 Sally Chipman (over 14 in 1828) married H. Harris
3. James Chipman
4. Joseph Chipman
5. Nancy Chipman, list separated from "my four children", but says "my daughter."

A 1961 history of "The Chipmans in Grant County, Kentucky" by Everett and Lenore Patrick Chipman is filed in the Family Files of the Grant County Public Library, Williamstown, Kentucky. The following is abstracted from this eighteen page typed history:

The first Chipmans to settle in Grant County, Kentucky were two cousins, John and Perry Chipman. John Chipman was born October 22, 1789 in Deep River, North Carolina, the son of John Chipman and Mary Harris. Perry Chipman was born in Deep River, North Carolina about January 23, 1793, and thought to be the son of Paris Chipman Chipman III adn Elizabeth Saunders.

John and Perry Chipman were the sixth generation of Chipmans in America and are descendants of John Chipman, who came to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship "Friendship" in 1631. Bert L. Chipman, author of the genealogy "The Chipmans in America 1631-1920" state: "John Chipman was the first and only one of the name to seek a home in America, and up to 1850 there was no Chipman in this country who was not descended from him".

John Chipman, one of the two cousins of THE SIXTH GENERATION of CHipmans in America to settle in Grant County, Kentucky, was born November or October 22, 1789. The third son of John Chipman and Mary Harris of Deep River, North Carolina, came to Kentucky about 1812 and married Nancy Jump, daughter of John Jump Sr., a resident of Delaware and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. later John Jump Sr. lived in North Carolina at Deep River and was a member of the State Militia. In 1810 he was a resident of Pendleton County, Kentucky (now Grant County). John Chipman and nancy Jump Chipman had three children:
1. Elizabeth, born September 1, 1813
2. James, born December 1815
3. William, born November 7, 1818.

SEVENTH GENERATION:
1. Elizabeth Chipman Faulkner, born September 1, 1813, married James Faulkner (Fortner) September 9, 1830. Their children:
(1) Nancy Jane, born February 8, 1831
(2) John Robert, born October 17, 1832
(3) Lucinda, born June 24, 1836
(4) William, born June 24, 1836
(5) Elizabeth, born October 3, 1838
(6) Thomas Jefferson, born November 14, 1840
(7) Charles Wesley, born February 23, 1843
(8) James K. P, born June 18, 1845
(9) Eliza, born November 18, 1847
(10 Lewis C., born December 29, 1849
(11) George Washington, born April 16, 1852
(12) Sarah, born January 23, 1855

2. James Chipman, first son of John Chipman, born December 1814, Scott County, Kentucky, died June 1895, Grant County, kentucky. He married first, Polly Kinman, July 18, 1833, born 1813, died 1882, and they had seven children:
(1) Louisa
(2) John married Sarah Frances Williams, born May 26, 1828, died September 6, 1906.
(3) Mattie
(4) Jane

(5) Betsy Ann
(6) Nancy Jane
(7) Paulina
He married second, Martha Kinman, December 14, 1882. They had two children:
(8) Thomas, born 1879
(9) James (Peck), born March 18, 1881.

3. William Chipman, second son of John Chipman, born November 7, 1818, Scott County, Kentucky, died June 10, 1875, married Relia Ann Juett, daughter of Joseph and Millie Juett July 1, 1841, born March 29, 1820, died September 1887. They had ten children:
(1) Joseph, born May 3, 1842, died January 8, 1915
(2) John W., born October 27, 1843, died June 6, 1939
(3) Millie Catherine, born March 26, 1846, died April 16, 1921
(4) William, born November 9, 1849, died September 11, 1889
(5) Noah Benjamin, born July 22, 1852, died June 26, 1932
(6) Adam Jefferson, born March 31, 1854, died August 15, 1934
(7) Nancy, born July 12, 1856, died in early childhood
(8) Jesse, born October 28, 1858, died November 13, 1915
(9) Jacob, born November 13, 1860, died November 15, 1924
(10) Lewis Newton, born April 6, 1864, died June 4, 1933.

Perry (Paris) Chipman, the other of the two cousins of THE SIXTH GENERATION of Chipmans in America to settle in Grant County, Kentucky, was born January 23, 1793. The second son of Perez (Paris) and Elizabeth (Saunders) Chipman of Deep River, North Carolina, he came to Scott County, Kentucky in 1809, to Pendleton County in 1811. He was a large landowner on Eagle Creek and served on the first Grand Jury in Grant County. He and his wife Anna had five children:
1. John
2. Saley, married Hase Harris
3. Joseph
4. James, married Luseon Hocklin February 23, 1852
5. Homey

SEVENTH GENERATION. John Chipman, oldest son of perry Chipman, was born in Pendleton County, Kentucky (now Grant County) about 1813, died about 1847, married Marry Edwards December 15, 1836. They had three children:
(1) Jesse Smith Chipman, born 1837, died 1897, married Mary E. Gaugh
(2) Joe Chipman, born 1838 (from the Kentucky Census 1850 for Grant County, this man at 12 years of age lived in the home of Brasilla Edwards, age 31). Joe Chipman served in the Civil War and never returned; this story was told Everett Chipman by James Chipman, son of John Wesley Chipman and Dorcus Jump.
(3) John Wesley Chipman, born 1840, died before 1871 (from the Kentucky Census 1850 this man at 10 years of age lived in the home of Robert Jump, aged 60 years.) John Wesley Chipman married Dorcus Jump January 9, 1862, and she married a second time, Henry Kinman, November 14, 1871.
