Emanuel Deitz

Emanuel Deitz was born about 1814 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He was married twice, first to Elizabeth Avenger on August 23, 1842 in Lowndes, Alabama. A blacksmith, he established his shop in Grant County, Kentucky near Cordova in the early 1850s. After Elizabeth's death about 1853, Emanuel met and later married Elizabeth Davis on July 27, 1856. She was born about 1830 in Scott County.

The children of Emanuel and Elizabeth (Avenger) Deitz include:

1. James K. Deitz, born December 23, 1844, was a Confederate veteran, having enlisted in Williamstown September 10, 1862 in Company F, Fifth Regiment Kentucky Infantry C. S. A. After the war he returned home and married October 1866, Louise Chipman, who was born in 1843. James K. was a farmer. He purchased sixty-five acres on Rattlesnake Creek in 1870 and additional land in 1880. Louise died in 1906 and James K. died in 1923.

2. Sarah Jane Deitz, born 1850.

3. William H. Deitz, born 1851, married February 9, 1869, Louisa Parker. She was born in 1851.

The children of Emanuel and Elizabeth (Davis) Deitz include:

4. John C. Deitz, born 1857, married Miss Link, daughter of A. B. and Lucinda Link.

5. Nancy A. Deitz was born May 18, 1858.

6. Mary E. Deitz was born June 24, 1859.

7. Martha E. Deitz was born 1863.

The oldest of the above seven children, James K. Deitz and his wife, Louisa Chipman, married in 1866, raised a family in Grant County.

1. James M. Deitz, born 1867, died June 12, 1949, married January 3, 1889, Eliza J. Bickers, born March 1867, died 1953.

2. Edward Deitz, born January 9, 1874, died October 21, 1940, married Mary Alice Murphy, daughter of Mack and Anna (McComas) Murphy. She was born 1870, died 1939.

3. Addie Deitz, born 1877, died 1962, married Alfred Fortner, born 1874, died 1960.

4. Clarence/Jimmy D. Deitz, born June 1882, died August 12, 1936, married December 11, 1902, Cora Evalin Garrett, born 1885, died August 2, 1960.

5. Alice Deitz married ____ Roland.

6. John Deitz, born 1884, died 1888.

The second of the above six children, Edward Deitz and his wife, Alice Murphy, raised a family in Grant County.

1. Elizabeth/Lizzie Deitz, born October 19, 1893, died 1952, married September 10, 1913, James Gordon, son of A. D. and Rebecca Gordon. He was born January 16, 1894 and died 1971. Their children: (A) Kline Gordon, born October 13, 1914, died October 21, 1991, (B) Florian Gordon, born February 27, 1916, died February 5, 1962, (C) Claude Gordon, born 1918, died 1918, and (D) James Prentice Gordon, born 1921, died January 7, 1976.

2. Mae Deitz, born 1894, died 1895.

3. Edna Deitz, born May 3, 1897, married September 1, 1928, Rollie White. He was born May 22, 1895, died June 1987.

4. Gertrude Deitz, born June 25, 1899, died December 2, 1949, married December 31, 1919, Louis Taylor, son of Llywellen and Addie Jane Taylor, born July 24, 1884, died June 25, 1956.

5. Leonard Deitz, born 1902, died 1902.

6. Vernon Deitz, born July 26, 1903, died May 11, 1979, married February 24, 1930, Ila Mae Perkins, daughter of Walter and Zala Perkins. She was born September 27, 1912, died January 25, 1974.

7. Bessie Deitz, born December 17, 1905, died August 1981. Did not marry.

8. Arnvil Deitz, born 1909, died March 5, 1941, married Dorothy Jump, born 1918, died 1985.

9. Ida Mae Deitz married Thurman Claypool.
