Thomas Jump
According to the 1830 Grant County, Kentucky census and 1840 Adams County, Illinois census, Thomas Jump was born between 1800-1810, although tile 1850 Adams County, Illinois census shows him as being 65 years old and thus is probably an error. He was the son of William and Mary (Beard) Jump as proven by the former's estate papers and a circuit court case. He first appears on the 1829 Grant County, Kentucky tax lists and is on the 1830 Grant County census with a wife but no children. The first Grant County bond book is missing and subsequent bond books indicate a number of marriages for which bonds exist, but which were never recorded in the county's marriage registers. Thus, Thomas Jump was probably married about 1829 in Grant County; his wife's name in the 1850 census is "Marcy". He appears on Grant County tax lists until 1836 and in 1836 he was noted as having 108 acres of land on Eagle Creek.
He was appointed for road work in 1833, 1834, and last in October 1836. Shortly afterwards, he apparently removed to Adams County, Illinois where he is listed on the 1840 and 1850 census records. He has not been located on any 1860 census, but there is a tombstone for "Mary? wife of Thomas Jump" who died September 22, 1865 at 47 years, 7 months, 14 days in Pulaski Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois. Thomas then married Mrs. Rhoda L. Ford on April 17, 1867 in Hancock County. He appears to be the "Homer" Jump, age 64 years, born Kentucky living in the household of Sylvester Jump in Osage Tnp., Vernon County, Missouri. In 1880, as Thomas Jump, age 72, born Kentucky, he is listed as "father" in the household of Sylvester Jump in Lincoln Tnp., Linn County, Kansas. This is the last known record of him. It is not known what happened to wife Rhoda. Census records for 1840 and 1850 indicate there were four children in this family, all from the first wife.
1. Angeline Jump, age 17 in 1850 and 27 in 1860, hence born circa 1833 in Grant County, Kentucky, married Robert W. Kincade on January 16, 1851 in Adams County, Illinois and is living with her husband and four children in the 18560 census for Keene Tnp., Adams County, Illinois. This family has not been found in later census records.
2. Mary Elizabeth Jump, age 13 in 1850, reported in the 1900 census that she was born in September 1837. She probably married first William L. Hudson on January 24, 1856 in Adams County, Illinois; he either died or more likely, they were divorced in that she married under her maiden name of Jump on April 1, 1859 in Adams County, Illinois to Ransom Plunkett. She and her second husband are living with two children (one surely actually Thomas Hudson although listed as Plunkett) in the 1860 census for Knox County, Missouri. The family is then on the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records for Vernon County, Missouri - last in the town of Nevada. In 1900, a Thomas Hudson born November 1854 in Illinois is listed as a "stepson" to Ransom Plunkett in the latter's household. Mary Elizabeth reported in that year that she has eleven children and that six were living. Ransom apparently died before 1910 because Mary is the head of the household in that year, with a son "Hudson" (sic) divorced, age 53 years, born Illinois. Mary is last known to be living alone in tile 1920 census for Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri although two of her sons Newton Plunkett and Sylvester Plunkett are also living in the same county.
3. Sylvester Jump was age 7 years in 1850, hence born circa 1843 in Adams County, Illinois. He married Sarah Ann Wilson on January 3, 1868 in Hancock County, Illinois, she was the daughter of John A. and Eliza Jane (Wilson) Wilson, the latter a native of Grant County according to her obit. Sylvester, like his father, hasn't been found anywhere on the 1860 census; by 1870, he was living with his wife but no children, and his father in Osage Tnp., Vernon County, Missouri. In 1880, he, wife, four daughters and his father were living in Lincoln Tnp., Linn County, Kansas. In 1900, he, wife and one daughter are living in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory and in 1910, he, wife, daughter and two Jump granddaughters are living in Comanche County, Oklahoma. They have not been located after that date.
4. Nancy A. Jump was age 3 on the 1850 Adams County, Illinois census; no later record of her has been found.
