THE MARKSBERRY FAMILY HISTORY--
Introduction:
The Marksberry name originated around 1680 in England. It was created from the Scottish title
"Marquess of Queensbury". The Queensbury title is also associated with the first rules of boxing, "The Queensbury Rules". The Queensbury title comes from the house of Douglas in Scotland where the family descendants still remain today.
Through the years the name has been spelled differently by various branches of the family. According to the records the original spelling was "Marksbury", but it is also found to be spelled "Markesberry" and "Marksberry". It is even found to be spelled differently among immediate families. Genealogist attribute this to different education levels. Most people would spell things the way it sounded to them, and unfortunately over the years this has created several different family lines---making it hard to trace those families because of the spelling variations...
During the late 1700's and early 1800's some of the families left Kentucky. Most of them migated to Missouri and Colorado. Over the years many other families have settled around the country, but the largest concentration of "Marksberry" families still remain in Kentucky. And no matter how they spell their name......they all started from one young man with the hope of a new future over three hundred years ago!
Origins of the "Marksberry" Name:
The "Queensbury" title, one of many with which the Scottish house of Douglas is associated, originated in the creation of Sir William Douglas (d. 1640) as Earl of Queensbury in 1633. He was the eldest son of Sir James Douglas of Drumlanrig (d. 1616). His grandson William the 3rd Earl (1637-1695), was created "Marquess of Queensbury" in 1682 and "Duke of Queensbury" in 1684. All of these titles and positions were created under the rule of King James II...
William had two sons----James the 2nd duke (1662-1711) and Samuel the 2nd marquess (1663-1745). James Douglas was the royal commissioner to the famous "Scottish Parliament" which met in 1700, and just after the accession of Queen Anne in 1702. James was made one of the secretaries of state for Scotland. Samuel however had different ambitions in life... He decided to go out on his own breaking all ties with his family's political background. His decision to leave led him to England around 1680. In order to insure his anonymity from his family...Samuel changed his name! Using his title "Marquess of Queensbury", he created the name "Marksbury"....
The name Samuel Marksbury begins appearing in English records shortly after 1680. Samuel a young man of about eighteen started his "New Life" by learning the trade of a surveyor. Samuel migrated to America sometime around the late 1680's, where he settled in Prince William County, Virginia. The records show him as married around 1700, but there is no record of his wife. It is believed that Samuel took an Indian bride. Samuel and his wife had only one known child. He was born in Prince William County, Virginia in 1711 and given the name Samuel Marksbury Jr...
Samuel Marksbury Sr. died in Prince William County, Virginia in November of 1745......
