Matthew Neal

Matthew Neal was born November 22, 1802 in Harrison County, Kentucky, son of William and Nancy (Davis) Neal and grandson of John and Agness Neal, later of Boone County, Kentucky. The Neal family was of Irish descent but it appears that John Neal was born in Virginia circa 1746-1747.

Matthew Neal first appears on the Grant County, Kentucky tax lists in 1829 and was married in Grant County on March 8, 1831 to Helena Collier who was named as a "granddaughter" in the will of Eleanor Barkshire. Helena Collier was born March 6, 1810 or 1811 and died between 1860-1870, probably in Grant County. Matthew died between 1870-1880, probably in Grant County. At one time, he owned 150 acres on Eagle Creek. They had six known children:

1. Nancy Margaret Neal (twin) was born 1832 in Grant County. She married William T. Lucas on April 30, 1857. They were living in Williamstown in 1870 with Matthew Neal.

2. Ann Neal (twin) was born 1832 in Grant County. She married James R. Conyers on February 15, 1866 in Grant County, Kentucky.

3. Perry Neal was born December 1, 1833 in Grant County, Kentucky. He married first, Nancy M. Simpson, on August 21, 1856; and he married second, Malissa Conyers, on February 25, 1873 in Grant County. This family eventually removed to Greenwood County, Kansas.

4. Mary M. Neal was born 1839 in Grant County. She married James H. Hoffman November 10, 1861 in Grant County, Kentucky.

5. Pauline L. Neal was born circa 1844 in Grant County. She married John W. Glinn February 15, 1872 in Grant County, Kentucky.

6. William D. Neal was born circa 1847 in Grant County. He was living unmarried in 1870 in Williamstown, Grant County, Kentucky.
