Charles Sechrest

Charles Sechrest was born 1781 in Maryland and married Ann Franks in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1805. She was born about 1787, the daughter of John Martin and Elizabeth Franks. Charles was a resident of Grant County, Kentucky from its formation, with land on Eagle Creek and later around Sherman. Reverend William Sechrest, a Methodist Minister, probably a brother of Charles, also resided in Grant County where he died in 1854. Charles and Ann had six children before her death in early 1825, after which he married Mary W. Fugate in Pendleton County on December 26, 1825 and had eight more children by her. Although illiterate, Charles must have been very shrewd, for at his death in 1857 he had large land holdings in Grant County as well as two tracts in Lewis County, Missouri, in addition to slaves and money, as witnessed by bequests to his children and grandchildren as shown below.
