James Smith

James Smith, a native of Lexington, was born February 19, 1804 and died April 16, 1894 in Grant County, Kentucky. He married Mary Franks April 9, 1835 in Grant County, daughter of John Franks and Elizabeth Cowgill, and granddaughter of John Martin Franks and Elizabeth Lail. She was born September 7, 1817 in Grant County and died September 24, 1896 in Grant County. They are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Grant County, Kentucky. Their known children:

1. John J. Smith, born February 15, 1836, died March 6, 1868, is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.

2. Napoleon B. Smith was born 1842.

3. Katherine Smith was born February 16, 1844 and died June 10, 1867. She married William Wyatt Beach February 8, 1860, son of Addison Beach and Mary Franks. He died January 6, 1894 at age 54 years, 11 months, and 9 day. The are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.

4. William Prior Smith was born 1844 and died in 1912. He married Elizabeth Brann, daughter of Mitchell Brann and Mary Peyton. She was born November 8, 1847 and died February 17, 1935 in Grant County. Their known children were (1) Maggie, born July 17, 1866 and died February 20, 1868 and, (2) Floyd, born May 13, 1868 and died April 7, 1872. Parents and children are buried in Mt. Zion Public Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.

5. Luthera Smith was born March 15, 1848 and died October 22, 1870. She is buried in Mt. Zion Public Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.

6. Robert Smith was born 1852.

7. Betty Jane Smith was born 1854.

8. Francis Marion Smith was born May 3, 1857 in Grant County, Kentucky and died March 27, 1936 in Grant County. He married Mary Belle Conrad September 24, 1879 in Grant County, daughter of William G. Conrad and Lucinda Hedger. She was born April 9, 1860 in Grant County and died July 11, 1956 in Grant County. They are buried in Mt. Zion Public Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky. Their children: (1) William Carl Smith, born November 5, 1880 in Grant County, died January 21, 1973. He married Cora Carnes, daughter of Marion C. Carnes and Laurie Franks. Their only children, twin sons, died in infancy in 1911, (2) Lena Earl Smith was born June 24, 1883 in Grant County and died April 29, 1974 in Grant County, (3) James Hobert Smith, born July 8, 1888, died May 23, 1978 in Grant County. He married Lillian Franks October 12, 1911 in Kenton County, Kentucky, daughter of Francis Marion Franks and Lou McBee. She died September 19, 1984. They are buried in Mt. Zion Public Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky and (5) Francis Harlowe Smith was born October 30, 1895 in Grant County and died February 21, 1970 in Grant County. He married Alma Leary October 7, 1914, daughter of Thomas J. Leary and Athleen Salmons. She was born 1897 and died February 26, 1918 in Salem, Virginia. They are buried in Mt. Zion Public Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.
