Joseph Spencer
State of Kentucky - County of Grant

Joseph Spencer, aged 76 years, a resident of Grant County, swears on oath that he served in the Revolutionary War. In September 1775 he was appointed in a minute battalion commanded by Col. L. Talifraw. In 1776 he was appointed Captain in the regular army and attached to the 7th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. William Dangerfield in the Virginia Line. He made an original declaration on February 12, 1819 and was granted a pension certificate #60. He states that he was a resident citizen of the United States on march 18, 1818 and since then he has not disposed of any of his property with the intent to diminish it. His schedule of property includes 125 acres of land, two old Negroes, two old mares and on colt, some cattle and hogs. He is a farmer but "very informed and totally incapable to pursue it". He has in his family a wife, Sarah Spencer, aged 74 years who is infirm and unable to support herself. Also Joseph D. Spencer, aged 47 years, who is not able to support himself in consequence of injuries sustained on a campaign under General Wayne and in the late war under General Harrison. Also living with him are Joseph and Milly, two slaves both old and infirm. Statement given August 21, 1820.  Recorded August 1820.  (He died August 27, 1829, aged 84.)
