Tewell Family

The Tewell family played an important part in the establishment of the Crittenden Baptist Church, which was formally constituted March 2, 1850 with its charter members coming from the Mt. Zion and Wilmington Churches. Included in the charter members were John Tewell, Joseph Tewell, James F. Tewell and Teresa Tewell and William H. Oliver and Learmah (Tewell) Oliver.

John Elrod Tewell was born circa 1791 in Virginia, died circa 1888 in Grant or Pendleton Counties. His first wife's name is unknown.

His family:
1. James Elrod Tewell, born March 18, 1824, died September 8, 1888, Pleasant Ridge, Pendleton County, Kentucky; first married November 9, 1847, in Grant County, Lucinda Alice Mathews. Their children:

A. Martha A., born 1852, married March 21, 1869, Pendleton County, Kentucky, Charles Hurd. They had two children, Eunice and Ernest, died in infancy. He married second, February 9, 1854, Frances Cook, born June 11, 1838, died January 16, 1926, Independence, Missouri, daughter of Samuel Cook and Elizabeth Lancaster. Their children were:

B. James Samuel, born March 28, 1856, died February 18, 1924, Holdridge, NE. He married Mary Alice Reed and went to Missouri in 1886 and became a lawyer.

C. Sarah Elizabeth, born 1857, died before 1884, married April 8, 1880, S. Columbus (Lum) White, born 1855. He married second in 1884, Margaret Cook.

D. William Elrod, born September 24, 1858, died May 15, 1943, married Louisa Jane Aydolette.

E. Fannie Margaret, born February 19, 1860, died September 3, 1937 in Grain Valley, Missouri, married May 15, 1879, Pendleton County, Kentucky, Asa Solomon Belew, son of Newton and Abigail Spegal Belew. They went to Nebraska and homesteaded.

F. George Franklin (Sonny), born March 22, 1865, died March 13, 1932 in Caddo, Pendleton County, Kentucky, married Lucy Hopper, and possibly married April 19, 188_, Mary A. Abner, born 1870, died 1918.

G. Clara Isabelle, born 1867, died 1922, married December 25, 1881 in Grant County, Kentucky, William Woodyard. She married second, John W. Arnold, son of Reverend Marcus M. Arnold.

H. Annie Grace, born 1870, died circa 1900, married February 14, 1886, Pendleton County, Kentucky, Jeremiah M. Belew, son of Newton and Abigail Spegal Belew.

I. John Hansford, born 1872, married April 12, 1893 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Jane Delaney.

J. Cashious Lamonti (Mott), born 1874, married February 8, 1894 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Eva Arnold. They went to the southwestern part of the United States.

K. Dora Dean, married December 16, 1882 in Grant County, Kentucky, George W. Baker.

L. Alice, married September 13, 1871 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, John Jones and lived in Price Hill, Ohio.

2. Leannah Tewell, born September 11, 1826, died July 22, 1879, Unity (Jag), Pendleton County, Kentucky, married October 9, 1843, William Harrison Oliver, born August 22, 1822, died July 19, 1885. He married second, November 9, 1879, Eliza Ann McDaniel.

Leannah's children:
A. Hiram, born 1847, married February 12, 1871, Elizabeth Ruber.

B. William Richard, born September 4, 1851, died May 25, 1923, married November 16, 1876, Pendleton County, Kentucky, Addie Belle Cook, daughter of Samuel Cook and Elizabeth Lancaster.

C. James Allen, born June 17, 1854, died April 22, 1920, married October 21, 1875 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Mary Isabell McMillian.

D. Anna Elizabeth (twin to Susan), born May 18, 1856, died April 24, 1879.

E. Susan Ellen (twin to Anna), born May 18, 1856, died January 21, 1927, married June 12, 1877, Newton Belew.

F. Francis M. (Frank), born March 28, 1859, married January 2, 1879 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Phelinda Sweet.

G. George W., born March 30, 1862, died March 20, 1914, married March 15, 1883 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Mary Elizabeth McMillian.

H. Martha J. (Mattie), born May 9, 1864, died June 9, 1930, married August 24, 1881 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, John Andy Ruber.

I. John E. never married.

3. Nancy Tewell, married March 8, 1846 in Kenton County, Kentucky, Marion Cook, born 1822, died June 9, 1891.

4. Harrison Tewell married Terressa Brown.

5. John L. Tewell married February 18, 1850 in Kenton County, Kentucky, Arminta Matthews and/or John Tewell who married March 26, 1845 in Kenton COunty, Kentucky, Nancy Cook.

6. Joseph Tewell, living with Nancy Cook in 1860 Kenton County Census.

7. Sarah Tewell from the 1860 Kenton County Census.
