Daniel Webster

Two of the children of Daniel and Polly Webster were listed on the first Census of Grant County, Kentucky, when it became a county, created out of Pendleton in 1820. (1) Dudley Webster appeared on the Pendleton County tax list in 1817, 1818, and 1819. Residing in the part that became Grant County, he was on that tax list in 1820 and 1821, before moving to Pendleton County; and (2) Daniel Webster Jr. first appeared on the Pendleton County tax list in 1819, residing in the part that became Grant County, then on that tax list in 1820. He moved away, reappearing on the Grant County tax list in 1824, where he thereafter acquired land on Ten Mile Creek. They are the second and fourth of the eleven children of Daniel and Polly Webster family described below.

Daniel Webster was born between 1750 and 1760 probably in Virginia. He was in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1810. Sometime between 1810 and 1820 he became a resident of Boone County, Kentucky, where he died. On May 8, 1833, Daniel wrote his will as follows: I, Daniel Webster, of the State of Kentucky and Boone County, feeling myself weak in body and in a low state of health, but in my right mind. But I know that I have got to die, Cheerfully I resign my body to the dust and my soul to God who gave it. I therefore, make my last will and testament to wit as follows: First - It is my will that my true and lawful wife, Polly Webster, shall have for her support during her natural life all the property I possess, that is to say all my land and stock of every description, household and kitchen furniture and after her decease what may remain to be equally divided among all my children and I as hereby ordain and appoint William Franks, Dudley Webster, Bevin Webster administrators. As witnessed my name this 8th day of May 1833.  Attest: John McCulic and Thomas Cunningham. His will was proven by the oats of John McCulic and Thomas Cunningham, subscribing witnesses, in Boone County Court, June Term, 1833. The eleven known heirs of Daniel Webster was determined from a suit in Grant County Court in 1840, and and are as follows:

1. Cornelius Webster was born between 1775-1780 in Virginia and died about 1848 in Boone County, Kentucky, where his will is recorded in Will Book E, Page 220. His wife, who preceded him in death, is unknown. Their known children were Ann Webster, Vardimon W. Webster, Absolam William Webster, and Martha Webster.

2. Dudley Webster was born between 1780-1790 in Virginia. He married Polly Vaughn, June 1, 1808 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Daniel Webster gave consent for his son to marry and James Vaughn gave consent for the marriage of his daughter. After Polly died, Dudley married Katherine Jones, a widow, March 14, 1841, in Pendleton County, Kentucky, where he died in 1844. His will was written January 20, 1844 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, and is recorded in Pendleton County Will Book 1, Page 19. In his will he did not name his wife, be she was given her lawful share. He mentioned his son, John James Dudley Webster, and "my three other children" - Daniel Singleton Webster, Matilda Webster and Malelia Webster.

3. James Webster was born about 1790 in Virginia and died in Grant County, Kentucky between 1860 and 1870. He married Dorey Jump, January 16, 1818, in Pendleton County, Kentucky. Consent for his marriage was given by his father, Daniel Webster, James not being of age. He married second, Nancy Hensley, January 16, 1834 in Boone County, Kentucky, and he married third, Permelia Webster, March 20, 1839, in Grant County, Kentucky. She was born about 1824. James and Dorey were the parents of Cornelius, Margaret, Lucinda, James Andrew Jackson, and George Washington Webster. James and Nancy were the parents of Cynthia webster. James and Permelia were the parents of Stephen D., Minanny, William A., Josephine, Lewis, Josephus, and Dorcus Jane Webster.

4. Daniel Webster Jr.was born about 1800 in Virginia and died January 9, 1846 in Grant County, Kentucky. He married Sarah Jane Cogswell, March 23, 1819, in Pendleton County, Kentucky. He will was written May 11, 1846 in Grant County, Kentucky and recorded in Grant County Court February 12, 1847, Will Book C. Page 37. Daniel is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky. Their known children were Pendleton G., Catherine, Sanford, Rebecca, Elizabeth A., Nancy Jane, Mary Eliza, Daniel S., Margaret, Sarah and Reubin Webster.

5. Frances Webster was born December 18, 1783 in Virginia and died November 5, 1847 in Fayette County, Kentucky. She married Cornelius Vaughn in Fayette County March 12, 1806, son of James Vaughn. Cornelius was born April 30, 1787 in Virginia and died December 20, 1859 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Their known children: Cornelius, Cosby Harrison, Matilda, Catherine, Richard, and Elizabeth Vaughn.

6. Judith Webster was born June 10, 1786 in Virginia and died March 10, 1851 in Franklin County, Kentucky. She married James Moore Sr., May 1, 1806, in Fayette County, Kentucky. He was born April 13, 1784 in Virginia and died June 27, 1851 in Franklin County, Kentucky. They are buried in Grennan Cemetery in Franklin County, Kentucky. Their known children: (1) a son born between 1806-1810 in Fayette County, Kentucky (2) Catherine Moore, born 1810 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died 1893 in Franklin County, Kentucky. She married John Flynn, December 7, 1839, in Franklin County, Kentucky, son of William Flynn and Ann Stinson. He was born about 1811 in Clark County, Kentucky and died April 3, 1852 in Franklin County, Kentucky. She married Mr. Merchant after 1852. Catherine is buried in Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky (3) James Moore Jr., born about 1812, died after 1850. He married Martha Ann Flynn, January 17, 1832, in Franklin County, Kentucky, daughter of William Flynn and Ann Stinson. She was born 1810 in Clark County, Kentucky and died April 28, 1874 in Franklin County, Kentucky (4) Permelia Moore was born February 24, 1818 in Franklin County, Kentucky and died February 28, 1839 in Franklin County. She married John Flynn, February 24, 1837 in Franklin County, son of William Flynn and Ann Stinson. He was born about 1811 in Clark County, Kentucky and died April 3, 1852 in Franklin County, kentucky. Permelia is buried in Grennan Cemetery, Franklin County, Kentucky (5) a daughter born between 1820-1825 (6) a son born before 1820-1825 (7) a son born before 1825 and (8) Courtney Moore born in 1826. She married James Hulette, February 21, 1850, in Franklin County, Kentucky.

7. Courtney Webster was born about 1788 in Virginia and died before 1819 in Fayette County, Kentucky. She married Butler Moore Sr., February 18, 1806 in Fayette County, Kentucky. He was born about 1772 in Orange County County, Virginia and died December 1850 in Fayette County, Kentucky. His will is recorded in Fayette County Will Book T., page 110, and was proven in Fayette County Court December 1850, by the oath of Wyatt Webster, one of the subscribing witnesses. The children of Butler Moore and Courtney Webster: (1) Thornton Moore, born December 21, 1806 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died January 27, 1891 in Fayette County. He married Elizabeth C. Hurst, June 2, 1841, in Fayette County, Kentucky. She was born 1821 and died August 8, 1878. After her death, Thornton married Mary E. Hurst in 1881. She was born December 19, 1841 and died March 25, 1915 (2) William Price Moore, born March 19, 1811 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died September 10, 1874 in Lafayette County, Missouri. He married Nancy E. Mason, born about 1840, and he married second, Mary Ellen Waddel, November 1852. She was born August 31, 1829 and died in 1902 (3) Eleanor "Ellen" Moore, born April 6, 1813 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died February 8, 1901, probably in Grant County, Kentucky. She married Edmond Massie/Massey, October 10, 1837, in Fayette County. He was born October 9, 1815 and died September 15, 1904, probably in Grant County, Kentucky. They are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Grant County, and (4) Butler Moore Jr., born February 7, 1816 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died February 16, 1910 in Lafayette County, Missouri. He married Mary Ann Hall, April 18, 1840, in Fayette County, Kentucky. She died June 19, 1897.

After Courtney's death, Butler Moore Sr., married Mary Ann "Polly" Roswell Lewis, widow of Samuel Lewis, January 11, 1819 in Fayette County, Kentucky. She was born about 1780 in Virginia and died between 1874-1875 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Their known children: (1) Francis Marlon Moore, born May 5, 1822 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died 1909 in Fayette County. He married Susan Ann Eales, December 28, 1843, in Fayette County, Kentucky. She was born April 1822 in Bourbon County, Kentucky and died 1901 in Fayette County, Kentucky (2) Marquis Lafayette Moore, born January 14, 1827 in Fayette County, Kentucky, died 1900 in Casey County, Kentucky.

8. Nancy Webster was born April 14, 1792 in Virginia. She married William Franks January 29, 1818 in Boone County, Kentucky. After his death, Nancy married George S. Gravit in Grant County, Kentucky on April 5, 1838.

9. Spencer Webster was born about 1794 in Virginia and married Jane Cullin in Fayette County, Kentucky, October 21, 1812, with Charles Cullin as surety. Spencer died in Fayette County, Kentucky. Inventory of his estate was made October 17, 1815 and was recorded in Fayette County, November Court 1815.

10. John Nelson Webster was born about 1794 in Virginia. He married Lucy Cullin in 1814 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.

11. Bevin Webster was born about 1800 in Kentucky and died about 1875. He married Polly Burns in Grant County, Kentucky, June 16, 1822. Their known children: Parker, Bryant, James, Thomas, Vardimon, Frances, Margaret, Willis, and John D. Webster. After Polly's death, he married Sarah Blackburn, a widow, October 3, 1869 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. Their only child was Nancy L. Webster.
