DIRECTORIES
Indian and Pioneer History of the Saginaw Valley with Histories of East Saginaw City and
Bay City from their Earliest Settlement; also Pioneer Directory and Business Advertiser
for 1866-1867. by Thomas & Galatian. This is the first directory for the Saginaw
Valley. It has been microfilmed under 4 titles, a history and 3 city directories. Saginaw
Valley was first possessed by the Indians. The Indians were puzzled why white men would
travel so far from their homes to settle on their land. In 1819 a treaty was signed and
the U.S. Government sent out troops to protect the valley. The troops abandoned the fort
in the Autumn of 1823. Only a few settlers were left. Gradually more settlers came and the
Saginaw valley was established.
