The Michigan American Local History Network is a central web page from which independent web sites containing historical or genealogical content about Michigan or it's counties, are linked.
If you are interested in hosting a Michigan county, please contact Bonnie McVicar-Briggs, Lesley Moss or Sondra Higbee, the State Coordinators for Michigan. We will be happy to help you. We would be happy to have volunteers who prefer to host a township, city or cover a topic in a township too, such as religion, history, cemeteries, occupations, etc. We can easily link your page to the County it falls under. If you want to contribute, please check out the Volunteer FAQ Page. Kalkaska was first settled in 1855 by William Copeland. By 1872 the railroads were being built further north Mr. Abbot and Mr. Thompson speculated that the railroad would come through what is now the town of Kalkaska and built a mill in early 1873. They were right and Kalkaska became the county seat. The mainstays of revenue were lumbering and farming. When they declined in the early 1900's so did the population. In the 1970's oil and natural gas were discovered. County links:
