If you are interested in hosting a Michigan county, please contact Bonnie McVicar-Briggs, Lesley Moss or Sondra Higbee, the State Coordinators for Michigan. We will be happy to help you. We would be happy to have volunteers who prefer to host a township, city or cover a topic in a township too, such as religion, history, cemeteries, occupations, etc. We can easily link your page to the County it falls under. If you want to contribute, please check out the Volunteer FAQ Page. This county was named for Stevens T. Mason (1811-1843), first governor of the State of Michigan (1835-1840). In 1675, Pere Jacques Marquette was ill so his party landed at the mouth of the river now named for him. Around 1850, the lumber men were attracted to area's rich forest. James Ludington established saw mill at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River and named the town after himself. Lumbering peaked in 1891 and salt deposits were discovered. A car ferry system was established by the Pere Marquette Railroad in 1897. County links:
