Haahr, age 86 of Hartington, NE, died on Friday, April 13, 2007 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with the Rev. Bob Bryan officiating. Burial will be at the Paragon Cemetery, rural Hartington with military gravesite rites by the Hartington VFW Post 5283. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 1-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday morning. Honorary Pallbearers will be Scott Dreesen, Norvell Lentz, Roger Andersen, Dean McGregor, Kelly Konken, Marvin Grindvold. Pallbearers will be Wendell's grandsons; Nathan Haahr, Justin Haahr, Jason Haahr, Kyle Haahr, BJ Verzani, and Marcus Fischer. Wendell P. Haahr was born on September 11, 1920 in Hartington, Nebraska to Andrew P. and Jenny (Jensen) Haahr. Wendell attended country grade school and attended Hartington High School thru the 10th grade. He joined the National Guard at age 17 from November 25, 1932 until October 3, 1940. He then entered the United States Army on December 23, 1940 and served until being honorably discharged on October 16, 1945. He was on active duty during WWII serving in the 134th Infantry Anti-Tank Platoon Headquarters Company. He fought in the European Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge. Wendell married Annabelle M. Fox on September 18, 1947 in Hartington. Wendell farmed in the Hartington area. He sold seed corn for Cornhusker Seed Co. and then for Dekalb for 48 years. Wendell was a substitute mail carrier before becoming a rural carrier in 1985 and then retiring in 1995. He also worked for ASCS for several years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 86 years and served on the church council. He was a former member of the District 47 school board, member and former commander of the Hartington VFW Post 5283. He and Annabelle were the chairmen for the Trinity Lutheran Fair Stand for many, many years. He was a member of the Paragon Cemetery Board. He was a big Cornhusker fan and loved to play cards. Wendell will be missed by his family and friends as he loved to visit and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Wendell is survived by his wife, Annabelle of Hartington; six children and spouses, Linda and Dennis Fischer of South Sioux City, NE, Cheryl and Victor Schultz of Dakota City, NE, Roger and Shirley Haahr of Laurel, NE, George Haahr of Hartington, Debra and Mondo Garcia of Gilroy, CA, and Sharon Haahr of Sunnyvale, CA; 20 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; three sisters and spouses, LaVerne and Merlin Evans of Hartington, Dorothy and Howard Curry of Ramsey, MN, Shirley J. Haahr of Sioux City, IA. Preceding Wendell in death were his parents, three brothers, Theodore, Richard and infant Andrew Haahr; and one grandson, Larry Fischer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Trinity Lutheran Church or Paragon Cemetery.
