Mr. Heimes passed away at his home in the southeast part of town, that afternoon his death being due to complications incidental to his advanced years. His little granddaughter died rather suddenly about 8 O’clock Tuesday evening. Altho taken ill last Friday and kept home since that time she was not thot to be seriously ill. When her condition did not respond to home remedies a physician was called Tuesday, and the disease was immediately diagnosed as diphtheria in a very serious form. Everything possible was done but the little life passed out just a few hours after that of her grandfather. Mr. Heimes was born in town of Halburbrandt, Westphalia, Germany on Sept. 21, 1845. He came to America in September 1869 locating first at Cincinnati, and then continued on to Cedar county, where he took up a homestead near Bow Valley, on which the farm is still occupied by his son Frank. A few years later he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Sahling, the marriage ceremony being the first to be performed in the first church at Bow Valley, the wedding taking place on April 28, 1875. Will Arens Sr., and Mrs. John Tigges were the attendants at the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Heimes were blessed with a family of seven children, all of whom are widely known over the county. After years of pioneering they came to Hartington to make their home and have been much admired because of their devotion to each other and to the church of which both had been long life members. Mr. Heimes is survived by his wife, three sons, Anton, Will and Frank, three daughters Mrs. Jos. Bange, Mrs. Henry Lange, and Mrs. M.H. Burbach and 46 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, Another son Emil, died here a few years ago. The funeral was held from Holy Trinity Catholic Church this morning, interment being made in the Catholic Cemetery. Elizabeth Lange, his little granddaughter, who followed him so closely in death was born and lived all her life in Hartington, where she was a popular little student at Holy Trinity School. Because of the nature of her illness a private funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, interment being made in the Catholic Cemetery. Other members of the Lange family were administered anti-toxin and other than the indisposition following immediately after its use are not ill. Holy Trinity school was closed on Wednesday and thorouly fumigated and the public school was closed this morning for the same purpose. Both schools will reopen on next Monday.
