mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bergman of Hartington

Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday

	----------

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bergman, longtime residents of Cedar county,

celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday afternoon with an

open house at the Knights of Columbus hall here.

A family dinner was held earlier Sunday at the home of their

daughter in Hartington, Mrs. Anton Jensen.

Miss Dianne Bottolfsen of Hartington registered the guests at

the open house. Miss Joann Bergman of Hartington was in charge of the

gift table. They are granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bergman.

Mrs. Margaret Redl of Pierce, Ida., cut the anniversary cake.

Mrs. Julius Grindvold of Circle, Mont.; and Mrs. Roy Armstrong of

Flandreau, S.D., poured. The three ladies are sisters of Mrs. Bergman.

Joseph Bergman and Ethel Gothier were married February 19, 1912,

at S.S. Philip and James Catholic church at St. James. Father Breitkoff

conducted the ceremony. Their attendants were Philipine Bergman (now

Philipine Pearson) and Paul Gothier. Mr. Gothier was present for the

anniversary.

Ethel Bergman was born on a farm near Anthon, Ia., the daughter of

Louis C. and Maud M. Gothier. The family later farmed near Climbing Hill,

Ia., and Elk Point, S.D. In January of 1909 they moved to a farm near

Obert where she lived until her marriage.

Joseph Bergman was born on a farm near Obert, the son of Philip

and Katharine Bergman. Mr. Bergman's father died when he was a small child.

He helped out on his mother's farm until his marriage.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Bergman farmed in the Obert

vicinity until 1922 when they moved to Flandreau. They farmed there three

years. Mr. and Mrs. Bergman returned to Cedar county and operated a farm

east of Hartington until the spring of 1938. At that time they moved to

Hartington.

Mr. Bergman has been a commercial trucker most of the time since

moving to this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Bergman have five daughters and two sons. They are:

Mrs. Francis (Laura) Whitehorn, Glenn Bergman, Mrs. Anton (Lucille) Jensen

and Mrs. Herbert (Loretta) Bottolfsen all of Hartington; Mrs. Leo (Dorothy)

Nielsen of Oregon City, Ore.; Dale Bergman of Shell Lake, Wis.; and Mrs.

Edward (Madeline) Kruse of Fullerton, Calif. They also have 30 grandchildren

and two great-grandchildren.

In spite of a heavy snow, about 100 people attend the open house.

Guests were present from New Mexico, California, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota

and Michigan.
