NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1854, SECOND DISTRICT
Abstract by Raymond E. Dale, Lincoln, Nebraska.

This area included the greater part of the counties, Nemaha and Otoe. The residence given indicates that the family was closer either to Fort Kearney (now Nebraska City), or to Brownville. The letters, "D", "W", "FS", and "Dbt", found in the census under remarks, indicate Democrat, Whig, Free Soil, or politics doubtful. This enumeration was signed under oath, November 20, 1854, by Chas. B. Smith(a). The work seems to have been carefully done.

NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1854, THIRD DISTRICT
This area is almost identical with Cass County. The enumeration was signed under oath, November 20, 1854, by Michael Murphy. The letters, W., D. and F. S., which follow most of the names in the original record indicate politics. The residence when given is indicated in the notes. In most cases where there was only one person listed under "White males of 21 and Up wards" or one under "Females of 16 and Upwards," it is evident that the enumerator failed to fill in the figures in the proper column at the time he went from house to house. These figures

are in different ink, and on the first page, few are filled in under "Females of 16 and Upwards." This page must have been overlooked when Mr. Murphy made his last check up before he handed in his report.
