NOTES

"In Nebraska a census was taken each year from 1869 to 1885. By the law of February 12, 1869, these enumerations were made in April by the precinct assessors, who certified the returns to the county clerks of their respective counties. The census law of February 19, 1885, provided for a census in June to be taken by special enumerators, the original reports to be deposited in the office of the secretary of state.

By the same legislative act the census law of 1869 was repealed. Only a few of these papers have been found, although many may still remain in the storage rooms of the various court houses in the state.

This enumeration of Stanton County was found in a vault of the University of Nebraska Library about ten years ago ..." (about 1934). Raymond E. Dale, Vol XXII, no 2, page 20.

The film of the 1885 NE Census is available at NSHS Library in Lincoln and you can arrange research with them. An alternative is to order the film at your local Family History Library (LDS).
