Lookup Guidelines

Please follow these guidelines when requesting a "lookup".

  1. If there is more than one lookup volunteer for a particular reference, only send your request to one of them, and don't always choose the first one listed.
     
  2. In the subject line, put "LOOKUP: Guernsey Co., OH".
     
  3. As the first line of the message, put the name of the source material (book title, CD#, etc.) from which you are requesting the lookup.
     
  4. Please limit your request to one or two specific names.
     
  5. Please thank the lookup volunteers for their efforts.

Vital Records

Guernsey County vital records began being recorded in the 19th century at the County Courthouse, with the Court of Common Pleas and/or Probate Court. Before 1810 March 1, London, Oxford, and Millwood Township records can be found at the Belmont County Courthouse in St. Clairesville, and the other townships' records can be found at the Muskingum County Courthouse in Zanesville. Recording of many of these events was transferred to state or federal responsibility in the 20th century. Here are the relevant dates:

Guernsey County land transaction records began being recorded in 1802. Visit the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management for government land sales records beginning in 1820.
