Thomas J. Bibby was born in 1861 in Wisconsin, the son of farmers, Richard and Mary who were both natives of Scotland.  The 1880 Federal Census records his father at the age of 53 and his mother at 41 years old.  An older sister, Jane was 21 and a younger sister, Marian was 17 yrs. old.  Thomas was helping on the home farm in Gale, Trempealeau, Wisconsin.  January 16, 1886, he married Laura B. Garfield (pg. 259, vol. 1, Neillsville, Clark Co., WI).  Their first son, Richard Walter (b. 9 Sep 1887) died February 18, 1888 in the home of Jennie Sturdevant and was buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery.  He was just nine days past five months of age.

Shortly after the turn of the century, the family moved to Tillamook, Oregon.  October 16, 1905, Laura died in Portland following an operation.  Her husband, two daughters and a son survived her.  July 3, 1912, Thomas married Viola A. Lucas (1860-1915) who was born in Independence, Polk Co., OR.  She was the daughter of Warren Watterman and Adelaide (Williams) Lucas.
