Ira Shubal Chapman was born April 28, 1835 in Ohio to Luman and Lois (Houghtaling) Chapman. He fought in the Civil War as a private with the 21st Ohio Infantry in Co. D. He married Ella who was twenty-two years his junior. When he died January 7, 1913, he was laid to rest in the East Thorp Village Cemetery in Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin.
