At last--Local WWII vet finally receives World War II medals
|
Jerry Cernik, of Neillsville, served 4 ½ years in the U.S. Army, with 11 ½ months active duty during World War II under General Patton, as part of the France Campaign. He was an 807 Tank commander. Sgt. Cernik received medals for his meritorious service in the war, but he did not receive them until 62 years later. He would not have received them yet if he had not seen an article in the American Legion Magazine a couple months ago listing an address to write to for anyone not receiving service medals. He received the medals shortly thereafter. Here Cernik holds the nine medals that were recently sent to him. They are: Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Attachment (Double), World War II Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Expert Badge & Rifle Bar, and Sharpshooter Badge & Carbine Bar.
