Abram H. & Elizabeth (Mattice) Shoemaker
Butler Township, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Abram & Elizabeth Shoemaker
Abram H. was born 27 Oct 1837 in Binghamton, NY, the son of John H. and Jerusha Shoemaker. His parents were both natives of NY. When he was 16 yrs. old, the Shoemakers moved to Summit, Waukesha, WI where Abram worked as a painter. His siblings were Jacob, Lorenzo, Charles (b. 22 Apr 1849, Gilboa, NY), Margaret, Arlow "Arthur" and Sarah. After 8 yrs. he returned to the Empire State where he enlisted with Btry. B 4th NY, H.A., 23 Sep 1861 at Gilboa, NY. His regt. under the authority of Col. T. D. Doubleday was organized in New York City and became known as "Doubleday’s Heavy Artillery." They left for Washington 10 Feb 1862, and served near Washington D. C. Their 1st camp was 5 mi. from the Washington, D. C. Chain Bridge over the Potomac. Abram received a disability discharge at Ft. Corcoran, VA, 31 Jul 1862 and that fall he married 17 yr. old Elizabeth A. Mattice, 19 Oct 1862.
Upper Battery at Chain Bridge, 1862
She was born Apr 1845, in Blenheim NY where their wedding took place and her parents were Isaac and Aurilla (Collins/Reynolds/Reynalds) Mattice. The Shoemakers children were all born in WI: Arthur (1865-1946), Charles (Jul 1870-1920 in an explosion), Frank (1872), Anna "Annie" (b. 1874, Mrs. Sharp of Portland, OR), Belva Aurilla (20 Jun 1885-16 May 1907, m. Clarence R. Greene of Greenwood) and Frances (d. 2 yrs., and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery). Arthur married Eda/Edith/Edna Hall and Charles married her sister, Lucy. The 1870-1880 census records reported the Shoemakers residence in Otter Creek, Eau Claire Co., WI and the 1885 Veteran’s Census listed their Augusta address. They had purchased 80 acres of land in Eau Claire Co., 10 Apr 1874 and another 40 acres 30 Dec 1874. The next summer, 30 Jul 1875, they purchased an additional 40 acres in Price Co., WI. The Shoemakers also owned property in sec. 16, Thorp Twp. and later resided in Greenwood, WI (bef. 1905). They eventually resettled in Augusta where they spent the remainder of their lives and are buried. Abram passed away 26 Feb 1923, after an illness of several weeks. He was a faithful soldier for his country, a loyal member of the G.A.R. and his loyalty to the old flag was an inspiration to others. He’d faithfully served his county during some its darkest hours and gave the same conscientious loyalty to his loved ones and friends.
