Al Welzien, Artificial Breeder for Tri-State Breeders of Baraboo, reached a new
milestone Monday, as he bred his 100,000th cow on the Charles Wissell farm near
Loyal (Clark Co., Wis.). Art Schraufnagel, Neillsville, Area Marketing Manager
for Tri-State congratulated Al. Also attending the ceremony was Norbert Friske,
Greenwood, a County Director for Tri-State.
Mr. Welzien reached the 100,000 cow mark after 22 years of breeding for
Tri-State. During that time he has averaged one car per year, putting on in
excess of 800,000 miles serving farmers in Clark County.
The tow year old cow bred Monday was one of 42 purebred Holsteins on the Wissell
farm. It's name was Wynn-Ellen Ivanhoe Lois. The Wissell herd produced 13, 687
pounds of mile and 512 pounds of fat, with a 3.7 test, according to the latest
available testing records.
Mr. Welzien is the first man in Central Wisconsin to achieve the record of
breeding 100,000 cows, and only 4 other inseminators in the nation have reached
this milestone in the artificial breeding business.
