Susanne Schuette, 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Schuette of route
1, Unity, proved recently that she is a quick thinker, and remembers what she
had been taught.
Susanne's four year old brother, Walter, was playing near a rubbish fire that
had nearly burned itself out. His pant leg caught fire, and he was unsuccessful
in his attempt to put it out with his hands. He started to run to the barn,
which was about 300 feet away. Susanne caught him and pushed him to the ground
and smothered the fire by rolling him about.
When questioned by her parents later, Susanne told then that her teacher, Miss
Wuethrich of the Loyal school system, had taught them not to run and to roll on
the ground if their clothes were on fire.
Walter suffered bad burns to his leg and hands, but is recovering at home. Mrs.
Schuette said that Susanne's quick action saved her brother from more serious
burns.
