Swartling, Benjamin J. (17 May 1902 – 4 July 1976)
Funeral services were held July 7 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,
Alma Center, for Benjamin J. Swartling, 74, of Merrillan, who died July 4, at
Black River Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Joseph Marx officiated, and burial as
made in Holy Cross Cemetery at Trempealeau. Arrangements were made by the Jensen
Funeral home, Hixton.
Mr. Swartling, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Swartling, was born May 17, 1902,
in Trempealeau. His marriage to the former Bernice Hare took place September 3.
1924, at Galesville. Mrs. Swartling preceded her husband in death on May 26 of
this year.
Mr. Swartling was a contractor for mail delivery on star routes for 40 years. He
began with a route from Trempealeau to Ettrick and later carried mail with his
sons on routes from Merrillan to Winona and Eau Claire to Tomah. He had lived in
Merrillan since 1947 and had also lived in Winona for six years.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald of Winona and Leo of Throckmorton, Tx.; two
daughters, Joyce Rhoades of Merrillan and Janice Mack of Eau Claire; three
brothers, Harry, William and Leonard, all of Trempealeau; three sisters, Mrs.
Woodrow Nagle of Winona, Julia Swartling and Mrs. Dale Critzman, both of
Trempealeau; and 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
