Chippewa Falls – A soo freight engine boiler exploded five miles west of the
city, badly scalding Engineer Arthur Giese, Minneapolis; Fireman William Gonyea,
Owen, Wisconsin, and Claude Merrill, Chippewa Falls.
The crown sheet of the boiler blew off and caught the victims in the cab,
blowing them out and scalding them from head to foot. They managed to get to a
farm house a quarter of a mile away, and were brought here to a hospital on a
special train sent out.
Gonyea is dead and Merrill is not expected to live.
