Cassata, Tony-Wins Art Competition (1977)
A talented, nature-loving 10 year old Brian Van Ranst, St. Paul, sketched out
his heavily tree-lined neighborhood before going to school one morning.
Je’s glad he did. When he returned to his home at 1160 North Lexington Parkway
in the afternoon, all of the elm trees were gone-cut down by city crews fighting
St. Paul’s wide-spread elm-disease.
Brian won a $300 share in the $1,500 scholarship awards presented by the
Schweigert Meat Company, Minneapolis, to 67 winners from Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Selections included 60 other art-pieces considered “Outstanding”, among the
finest creative work entered Schweigert presented $10 scholarship awards
including one to Tony Cassata, a third-grader at Abbotsford Elementary.
Cassata’s teacher is Mr. Slowinski.
Tony’s water color picture was titled “Midwest.” It pictured a river, boat,
trees, flowers and a mountain.
