Watkins Community Tours

Contributed by Jane Braun

In the mid 1900's the Watkins Company sponsored tours to their Winona, MN plant for customers living in Greenwood and the surrounding area.

Office

A world-famous architectural achievement built in 1911 and still impressive by modern standards. It is 300 feet long with the entire exterior constructed of Blue Bedford Stone. The distinctive curved roof and dome are copper covered. Mahogany, mosaic tile, matched Sienna Marble and stained glass grace an interior that houses approximately 240 employees. The magnificent dome interior is made of many thousands of pieces of glittering tile; just one of the building's many impressive and unique features.

Plant

The Watkins plant is a complex of seven interconnected buildings covering approximately 10 acres. Here, liquids (such as vanilla), dry material (such as spices), and semi fluids (such as cosmetic creams) are manufactured, accurately measured and placed into glass bottles and jars, tin cans, plastic bottles, flexible plastic pouches, bags of various sizes, collapsible tubes and pressurized containers for shipment to consumers around the world.
