SPEISER

I'm John W. SPEISER, and our family is looking for some information about the SPEISER clan who used to live in the Humboldt area. We know that David SPEISER came to the area in 1855 with wife, Elizabeth and newborn son, David, Jr. David ended up owning the Humboldt Sentinel, which he managed together with his wife, Ida's, father, George Gird, and her brother. I have that information readily available from the 1882 Andrea's and Edward's 1917 Histories on Richardson Co.

We particularly want to know what happened to one of David Jr. and Ida's sons, Ralph William Speiser, who was my grandfather. At some point Ralph moved away to North Platte, then Lincoln, then Durango CO. where our dad was born. We'd really like to talk to someone who might know more about that. Ralph eventually moved to Newburgh, NY. We'd be glad to share what we learn. If anyone has any other info on David and Elizabeth Speiser, or any other SPEISER history, please put us in touch! We are thinking of visiting the Humboldt area next summer, for pleasure and exploring history. Thank you and Best Regards, John W. Speiser 1 Duryea Road, Upper Montclair, NJ 07043. Phone: 973-746-5554 or 908-286-0023. speiser@nedev.com

I only know of his one sister, Betty Fern Knecht and her art background. I don't know where she was married, or where the Knechts were from. A lot of research ahead I'm afraid. I was hoping by putting out a query, others who have done research may have some of my missing pieces! Brenda Muntz mountmusc@hotmail.com

WITT, HUEBNER

I have recently begun researching the Gustav A. WITT/ Sophia HUEBNER (sometimes spelled HUBNER) family history. I am also very new to genealogy in general, so please bear with me! I am not asking anyone to do my research for me, but am excited to connect with anyone interested in these families and even possibly related. Gustav WITT was the oldest of 10 children of John A. WITT and wife Augusta who immigrated from Germany and settled in Richardson County in 1873. Gustav was born in Germany on 5Aug1869. Being the oldest, I suspect most of his siblings were actually born in Richardson County. I also suspect that his father was not named "John" but "Johann". I do not yet know where in Germany they originated. Gustav's parents moved to Falls City in 1908. Augusta died in 1916 and John died in 1917. I have the names of five of Gustav's siblings: Agnes (married George Mathews), Henry, Frank, Bertha (married surname Myers), and Ida. These were his living siblings in 1917 and at that time were living in Nebraska - Frank and Ida the only ones I am fairly certain lived in Richardson County. Frank had taken over running the family farm.Sophia HUEBNER immigrated from Mechlevgburg (sic, her obituary, I believe it is supposed to be Mecklenburg), Germany in 1888 and immigrated with her father, brother and sister to Richardson County (this also from her obituary). Of her family, the only name I have is for her brother, Fred, who was living in Dearing, KS at the time of her death. Gustav bought farmland in Axtell, Marshall, KS in 1893. He and Sophia were married in 1895 (don't know if it was in NE or KS) and after that, both lived out the rest of their lives in Axtell, Marshall County,KS. Gustav died in 1938 and Sophia died in March of 1955. The two sources of information I have are Sophia's obituary, which appeared in The Axtell Standard on Thursday, March 31, 1955 and a section from Emma Forter's History of Marshall County Kansas, published in 1917. I was surprised to learn from Forter's section on Gustav Witt that he had so many siblings. The remaining family descended from him is very small. Hoping to connect with anyone else also interested in this family, especially other descendants of John and Augusta researching the family line via any of Gustav's siblings. Plan to do plenty of digging and very happy to share! email: mousie@rochester.rr.com Thanks! Beth Cook
