SUMMARY OF PROCEEDINGS.

      The fourteenth session of the Nebraska Annual Conference was held in Omaha, beginning October 1st, at 9 o'clock A. M.

      Bishop THOMAS BOWMAN presiding.

      The opening religious services were conducted by Dr. J. M. Reid, Corresponding Secretary of the Missionary Society of the M. E. Church, after which the Bishop addressed the Conference and then proceeded to the administration of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.

     The Secretary of the last session called the roll, and the following brethren answered to their names:

     The transfer to this Conference of the following persons was announced, and their certificates were filed:

     T. H. Ti_bles, a probationer of the 2d year, B. Wilkinson, Francis M. Wheeler, Edwin Buck, Calvin M. Bryan, Elders.

     W. B. Slaughter was elected Secretary, and authorized name his assistants.

     L. F. Britt, Wm. Peck and John Gallagher were named a such assistants.

     Half-past 8 A. M. was fixed as the hour of opening, and 12 M. as the hour of closing each session.

     The committee on nominations reported, and the report was adopted. (See Standing Committees.)

     A committee on claims of the Book Concern at New York was ordered, and T. B. Lemon, A. J. Swartz, G. B. Crippen, J. Adriance, C. L. Smith and G. H. Wehn were named such committee..

     Ordered, that the triers of appeals be nominated by the cabinet.

     A. J. Swartz was appointed a committee on current book and periodical accounts at New York.

     A circular from the corresponding secretary of the S. S. Union and Tract Society was presented, read, and referred to the committee on Sunday Schools.

     The tenth question--"Was the character of each preacher examined?"--was taken up, and M. Pritchard presented a report of: Nebraska District, and his character was passed.

     T. B. Lemon, W. S. Blackburn, W. B. Slaughter, D. F. Rodabaugh, D. Hart, reported and their characters were passed.

     J. W. Taylor was passed.

     L. W. Smith and D. J. Ward passed, and were granted a superannuated relation.

     J. B. Maxfield presented a report of Beatrice District, and his character was passed.

     D. Marquette, H. Presson, A. J. Swartz, E. Wilkinson, W. D. Gage, reported, and their characters were passed.

     H. T. Davis presented a report of Lincoln District, and was passed.

     G. S. Alexander, C. McKelvey, R. Burge, A. L. Folden, W. B. M. Colt, H. P. Mann, G. B. Crippen, S. H. Manley, J. G. Miller, were passed.

     A. G. White reported Kearney District, and was passed.

     C. L. Smith, E. J. Willis, reported, and were passed.

     The withdrawal of R. H. Crane was reported.

     The eighth question--"Who are the supernumerary preachers ?" was taken up, and L. Janney, J. L. Fort and L. F. Whitehead were. continued.

     G. W. Elwood, R. C. Johnson, L. F. Britt and W. B. Grantham were reported effective.

     The withdrawal of M. F. Shinn, and the transfer of J. H. De La Matyr, to the Nevada Conference, were announced.

     The ninth question --"Who are the superannuated preachers?" was taken up, and Z. B. Turman, J. T. Cannon, C. W. Giddings and D. H. May were continued.

     Hiram Burch was reported effective.

     The third question --"Who remain on trial?" was taken up, and S. D. Roberts and T. W. Brookbank were continued.

     The seventh question --"Who have been elected and ordained elders this year?" was taken up, and J. H. Presson was elected.

     A. G. Blackwell was located at his own request.

     S. P. Wilson was appointed committee on Post Offices.

     D. F. Rodabaugh was added to the examining committee of the third year.

SECOND DAY.


     Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Bowman in the chair.

     The roil was called, and the further call dispensed with.

     The minutes were read and approved.

     J. M. Adair was appointed assistant treasurer of the Board of Church Extension.

     C. L. Smith was appointed a committee on Memoirs.

     D. Marquett, J. B. Maxfield and R. Burge were appointed a committee to prepare a memorial to the next legislature on the subject of protection to camp meetings.

     The report of the Book committee was read, and referred to the committee on Periodicals.

     The trustees of the 1st M. E. Church in Nebraska City were authorized to sell their parsonage property.

     The tenth question--"Was each preacher's character examined?" was taken up, and G., W. De La Matyr reported the Omaha District, and, the name of Clark Wright being called, Bro. De La Matyr requested, in his own behalf and in behalf of

     Bro. Wright, a committee of inquiry touching their administrations respectively, and the committee was ordered.

     Charles McKelvey, D. F. Rodabaugh and D. Marquett were named as such committee.

     J. M. Adair, F. M. Esterbrook, C. A. King and F. M. Wheeler reported and were passed.

     S. P. Vandoozer reported Covington District, and his character was passed.

     A. Burris was located at his own request.

     Bishop Bowman announced the transfer, one year ago, of Thomas Alexander, and the Presiding Elder of Omaha District announced the death of Bro. Alexander.

     J. Adriance was appointed a committee to receive the collection for the Episcopal Fund.

THIRD DAY.


OMAHA, Oct. 3d, 1874.     

     Conference met at 8 1-2 o'clock A. M. Bishop BOWMAN in the chair.

     The minutes were read and approved.

     A communication was received from the agent of the American Bible Society, read, and referred to the committee on the Bible Cause.

     W. B. M. Colt asked and was granted a supernumerary relation.

     David C. Brannon reported, and his character was passed.

     The third question--"Who remain on trial?" was taken up.

     S. D. Roberts, Thomas Brookbank, Wm. Worley, A. L. Goss, D. S. Davis and Richard Pierson reported, were passed and continued on trial.

     C. McCune was discontinued on account of ill health.

     T. J. Newman was discontinued at his own request.

     Hiram Keith was discontinued.

     Joseph M. Richards, George Scott and John Patterson reported, their characters were passed and they were continued.

     W. H. Porter was discontinued at his own request.

     The sixth question--"Who are the Deacons of the second class;" was taken up.

     L. F. Whitehead was continued in a supernumerary relation.

     G. H. Wehn reported, and was passed.

     Dennis B. Lake was passed, and will appear before the committee of the 3d year for examination.

     Wm. Peck, S. P. Wilson and Calvin M. Bryan reported, and were passed.

     The fourth question--"Who are admitted into full connection?" was taken up.

     John Gallagher, J. R. Reed and T. Henry Tibbles were admitted and elected to Deacon's orders.

     T. A. Hull reported, and his character was passed.

     S. B. Bollman was admitted, he being an Elder, and he was excused from future examinations.

     C. W. Comstock, Charles Reilly, J. R. Wolfe, Joel Warren and Jesse Perkins were elected to Deacon's orders as local preachers.

     The committee on Temperance reported.

     J. G. Miller moved to amend by inserting the following in the report:

     WHEREAS, The Bishops of the M. E. Church in their last Pastoral Address pronounced the prohibition of the sale and use of intoxicating beverages the leading reform of the age; and, whereas, the last two General Conferences of our Church have expressly pronounced la favor of prohibition; therefore, be it

     RESOLVED, That we adopt, with emphasis, the language of the Address of our Bishops, which reads in substance as follows: --"The Methodist Episcopal Church will not rest from her labors until the use and sale of intoxicating drinks shall cease; let prohibition receive your support!"

     The report thus amended was adopted.

     G. S. Alexander and C. L. Smith asked leave to withdraw their names from the report, and their request was granted.

of the M. E. Church, addressed the Conference, and the Conference, by resolution, assured Sister Newman of a cordial welcome at all our charges.

AFTERNOON SESSION.


     Conference met at 4 o'clock, Bishop BOWMAN in the chair.

     The committee of Inquiry reported no cause for action by the Conference.

     The following committees reported, and their reports were adopted:

On Sunday Schools,
On Memorial,
On Church Extension,
On Education,
On Auditing Presiding Elders' Accounts,
On the Episcopal Fund, and
On Periodicals.

     T. B. Lemon, W. B. Slaughter and S. H. Manley were appointed a committee to prepare a constitution for a Conference Educational Society.

     A draft for $30 was ordered drawn on the chartered fund.

     The vote by which A. Burns was located was reconsidered, and he was granted a supernumerary relation.

EVENING SESSION.


     Conference met at 9 o'clock P. M. Bishop BOWMAN in the chair.

     The second question--"Who are admitted on trial?" was, taken up.

     Samuel A. Bear, Wm. H. Tibbetts, Augustus Drahms, E. J. Hancock, Dayton Andrus, Charles Reilly, J. R. Wolfe, George A. Bethard and J. Q. A. Fleharty were admitted.

     Thomas Audas, J. W. Stewart and Robert Rowbotham were re-admitted.

     The transfer of John W. Plummer, a deacon of the first class, and D. A. Crowell and J. Marsh, elders, was announced by the Bishop.

     The committee on Tracts and that on Periodicals reported, and the reports were adopted

     The seventeenth question--"What are the claims on the Conference funds?" was taken up.

     Sister Roberts was named as a claimant, and her claim of $500 was reported.

     Cyrus W. King and S. P. Bollman were granted a supernumerary relation, without appointment.

     Resolutions of thanks were adopted.

     Conference adjourned to meet at 8 o'clock Monday morning. The benediction was pronounced by F. M. Wheeler.

FOURTH DAY.


     Conference met at 8 A. M., October 5th. Bishop BOWMAN in the chair.

     Religious services were conducted by A. J. Swartz.

     The minutes were rend and approved.

     The treasurer of the Board of Church Extension reported.

     Certificates of Ordination of John Gallagher, James R. Reed, as travelling (sic) deacons, of Chester H. Comstock, Jesse Perkins, Charles Reilly and Joseph R. Wolfe, as local deacon,, and of Joseph H. Presson, as an elder, were presented by the Bishop.

     A resolution of thanks to Bishop Bowman was adopted by a rising vote.

     Also, a vote of thanks to the ladies of the 1st M. E. Church in Omaha, for the delightful reception given to the Conference.

     RESOLVED, That it be a standing order of Conference business that Preachers and Presiding Elders who have Statistical Reports to make, present these reports on the first day of Conference to the committee.

     The place of holding the next session of the Conference was fixed at Falls City.

     The committee on Missions reported.

     It was resolved that one preacher from each district be added to the committee on Missions.

     The Conference adjourned. The appointments were read, and the benediction was pronounced by Bishop Bowman.
