Education.

1st. RESOLVED, That we are in full sympathy with the cause of higher education in Nebraska, and throughout the world.

2d. Resolved, That we believe that the diligent study and faithful application of the provisions of the. Discipline would result in the most gratifying success, exceeding our most ardent desires.

3d. Resolved, That we recommend the formation of a Conference Educational Society, and, also, the appointment of a committee to draft a constitution for said society, and report the same to the Conference at its next annual session.

G. W. ELWOOD, Secretary     .

Conference Trustees.

The Trustees of the Nebraska Conference submit the following report.

In accordance with instructions from the Conference at its last session, the brethren ad citizens of the city of Lincoln were duly notified of the action of the Conference, end invited to present propositions for

the location of a seminary in that city. No proposition having been presented from that point within the time specified by the Conference, it was thrown open to competition from other places.

But one proposition, however, has been received, viz: from Kearney Junction, the substance of which is: Six thousand dollars cash, about eight hundred acres of land adjoining the city, and about three hundred lots within the city, valued at from fifty thousand to sixty-five thousand dollars. This proposition is now pending before the Trustees, who are invited to visit Kearney at their earliest convenience, and thoroughly investigate the case. They therefore ask for instruction upon the subject from the Conference.

Lots were drawn for the term of service of the Trustees, in accordance with instructions from the Conference, with the following result:

     For one year--W. B. Slaughter, M. Pritchard and S. P. Vandoozer, ministers, and F. H. Rogers and I. L. Simington, laymen.

     For two years--J. B. Maxfleld and A. G. White, ministers, and D. W. Scott. W. E. Hill and W. A. Burr, laymen.

     For three years.--G. S. Alexander, J. G. Miller, T. B. Lemon and H. T. Davis, ministers, and M. L. White, layman.

The time of the one year members of the Board having expired, the Trustees submit the following names for the term of three years: W. B. Slaughter, M. Pritchard and S. P. Vandoozer, ministers, and E. H. Rogers and I. L. Simington, laymen.

     D. W. Scott and W. A Burr, members of the Board with one more year to serve, having removed from the bounds of the Conference, the following names are nominated to fill the vacancy, viz.: H. W. Hardy, of Lincoln, and Asbury Collins, of Kearney Junction.

The Trustees would respectfully ask of the Conference the necessary authority to locate and build a Seminary, if in the judgment of three-fourths of the Board it be prudential to do so, and also to appoint and employ an agent to solicit funds in aid of this institution.

Church Extension.

Being deeply impressed with the importance of the work to be accomplished by the Church Extension department of our beloved Zion, and of the urgent demand for help from many churches in the opening West--which help can only come from this Society; and recognizing

with gratitude the important and timely aid which we have received, we feel impressed to say that, with the fullest confidence in the management of the affairs of the Society, we take pleasure in commending it to the increased liberality of our people, and while we are fully aware of the embarrassment under which they are placed by the great scourge that has thrown its blighting shadow over our State, we would urge that, as a measure of self protection, the Church do all in her power to gather larger collections than ever before for this cause, fully believing that it will return to us again multiplied many times.

Tracts.

Sensational literature abounds and is read with avidity. We live in a busy age, which tends in its haste to be superficial. Books of solid worth are in danger of being neglected. But few of the people have either the time or the inclination to. read them. Something short, popular in form, but charged with gospel truth is a necessity. A Tract of a few pages, or of one page, may attract attention and secure the time for reading it, when something more extended would be laid aside. Good is often accomplished by those silent messengers when other methods have failed. And

WHEREAS, Religious Tracts are a powerful auxiliary to the preaching of the gospel, therefore.

RESOLVED, 1 That the Church ought zealously to use this agency everywhere.

2d. That we will seek by preaching and other methods to awaken zeal in this good work, to the end that the Church may bring all her forces to the help of the Lord against the mighty, and that the world may soon be converted to Christ.

tion, would earnestly urge greater efforts upon our preachers and people to extend it still more widely. An "Advocate" for every Methodist family, Sunday. School papers for all of our children, and a "Quarterly Review" for every preacher, ought to be our motto.

     Respectfully submitted.

that does not work in the Sunday School loses the first and the best opportunity of winning souls to Christ, and most necessarily prove to great extent unsuccessful in being instrumental in the con version or our children.

4th. That we, as a Conference, would call the attention of the Presiding Elders to the subject, asking them to Bee that the preachers j their respective districts do carry out the designs of the discipline.

Temperance.

The committee on Temperance submit the following report:

We have no new gospel of Temperance to proclaim; we adhere the sentiment of our last year's report, and would urge upon on preachers and people the need of increasing vigilance and effort in this great reform.

It is no time to stay our hands, or diminish our labor. Never before in the history of the Church, bas the "Temperance cause" afforded the promise of such glorious results, and J

WHEREAS, The Bishops of the M. E. Church in the last Pastoral Addresses pronounced the prohibition of the sale and use of intoxicating beverages, the LEADING reform of the age, and

WHEREAS, The last two General Conferences of our church have expressly pronounced in favor of prohibition: therefore he it

RESOLVED, That we adopt with emphasis the language of the address of our Bishops, which reads in substance as follows: "The M. E. Church will not rest from her labors, until the use and sale of intoxicating drinks shall cease. Let PROHIBITION receive your support."

We hail with joy and praise to God the advent of woman in a new and more efficient manner than ever before in the field of temperance effort and reformation, and we chronicle as one of the most marvelous interpositions of Divine Providence, the fact of the "Temperance Crusade", so called, in our land. Therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That we hereby pledge to the women of our own and sister churches our hearty cooperation in all their efforts in the cause.

We also recommend that Brother J. G. Miller be re-appointed to the office of State Temperance Agent, which position has been filled by him for two years past.
