KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OF NEBRASKA
405

The next in regular order of business was the report of the State Secretary whereupon the State Secretary rendered the following report

Worthy State Deputy and Brother Knights:
I respectfully submit herewith the report of the work done by the State Secretary during the past year.
The report of the Committee on Mileage and Assessment adopted by the State Council at York, in 1922 provided that a per capita tax of forty cents per member be levied for the general fund, and twenty-five cents per member for the Western Mission Fund making a total of sixty-five cents due from each member in the state.
It is a pleasure to inform you that all of the forty-one Councils have cheerfully paid this high per capita tax making a total of $6,706.20, of which $4,127.20 was for the general fund and $2,579.00 for the Western Mission fund, which makes a grand total collected for the Western Mission Fund during the six years of the levy of $12,797.05.
The total membership reported by the forty-one Councils being 10,318, or an increase during the year of 166, with an addition of five new councils on the report. The increase in memebrship (sic) has not increased any with the additional new Councils during the past three years as the 1920 report with thirty-four Councils shows a membership of 10,442, or an increase of seven Councils and a decrease of 124 members in the three years.
The report shows the largest death rate of any year since the organizing of the State Council, or nine Insurance and fifty-one Associate, a total of sixty deaths during the year.
I submit herewith a detailed report showing the total Insurance and Associate membership of our Order in the State by Councils, also the amount collected from each Council.

Respectfully submitted,
MARK BURKE,
State Secretary.

On motion duly made and seconded the report of the State Secretary was adopted and ordered published with the minutes of the convention.

Report of State Chaplain

The next order of business to be considered was the report of the worthy State Chaplain. Thereupon the report of the State Chaplain was read by Past State Deputy George F. Corcoran, as follows:

Sutton, Nebr., May 21, 1923.

Worthy State Deputy, and Brother Knights: During the past few years the Knights of Columbus, as a National Catholic organization, has received a great deal of favorable public notice. This is especially true in the field of patriotic and welfare service, and as an organization undertaking a work with which it was utterly unfamiliar, it merited all the credit it received. There is great danger, however, that the local and state councils of the Knights of Columbus. might be inclined to rest content with the reflected glory of the Order as a whole, and both the individual members and the councils lose that sense of responsibility which rests upon them. Without the exercise of such service ambition dies and the service itself grows lax.
