LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, JANUARY, 1929

NO. 1

THE DESCENDANTS OF ELISHA7 PARKE

By Mrs. Lerah Gillett (Stratton) McHugh, of Fort Collins, Colorado

Daniel6 Parke, the son of Joseph5 and Amity (Cady) Parke, (Joseph4 and Mary (Smith), Nathaniel3 and Sarah (Greer), Thomas2 and Dorothy (Thompson), Robert1 and Martha (Chapin) [see F. S. Parks Genealogy of the Parke families of Connecticut (1906)], was born at East Haddam, Connecticut, 6 April 1758. He died at Camden, New York, 6 October 1836.

He married, 13 April 1779, Esther Ranney, daughter of George and Hannah (Sage) Ranney, who was born 8 January 1761 and died at Camden, 24 May 1818. They were married by the Reverend Samuel Parsons.

At the age of ten years, Daniel Parke was bound out to a paternal uncle by marriage, by the name of Bevin, who married for his second wife a widow named Johnson, who had adopted her niece, Esther Ranney, daughter of George Ranney, of Chatham, Connecticut. The Bevins, with their various children, lived on a farm near East Hampton, Connecticut.

At the age of seventeen Daniel Parke enlisted in the Revolutionary Army. The following letter from the Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D. C., gives their record of his service:

"In Reply to your request for a statement of the military history of Daniel Parke, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, I have the honor to advise you, that from the papers on file in his Pension claim, it appears that he served five days in April, 1776, under Silas Bunham, during the Lexington Alarm. His second term of service began the same month, and was for seven months in Capt. Tyler's company, of Col. Parson's regiment, Conn. troops. Beginning in Sept. 1776, he served for six months in Capt. Jos. Churchill's Co. of Col. Comfort Sage's Regiment of Conn. troops. His last term of service was for three years, beginning in April 1777 in Capt. Warner's Co., of Col. Samuel Wylly's Regiment, Conn. During the last mentioned service, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal on Dec. 1, 1779, and to Sergeant on Jan. 18, 1780."

Signed: D. I. Murphy, Commissioner.

THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

The following is a transcript of the military record of Daniel Parke, taken from Connecticut men in the War of the American Revolution (copy in the Pension Office, Washington) :

"Formation of 3d Regiment, 1777-1780; Samuel Wyllys, Colonel; Daniel Parke, private, Capt. Warner's Co.

"The Regiment was ordered to rendezvous at Hartford, where it was assigned to the Frst Brigade, commanded by Brig,-Genl. Sam. Holden Parsons, of New London, (Apr. 14, 1777). Repelled the enemy at Danbury (Apr. 26-7), marched to Peekskill, N. Y., where on July 1st Major-Genl. Israel Putnam assumed command of the Conn. Division when the Brigade took post at West Point, Point Wyllys, at that place, being named after the Colonel of the Regiment. In the summer of 1778, the Regiment encamped at White Plains with Washington's main army. In 1779 served in Genl. Heath's wing on the east side of the Hudson, repelled Tryon's invasion on July 5, 1779, wintered 1779- 80 at Morristown, N. J., and served on the outposts. The winter of 1779-80 was of unusual severity, when cold, hunger and want, caused the greatest suffering among the troops."

The following is a copy of the promotion of Daniel Parke to the rank of Sergeant, taken from the Pension Office files:

"Samuel Wyllys, esq. Col. of the 3d Conn. Battalion of foot, and in the Service of the United States, to Daniel Parke: Greetings."

"Reposing special trust, and confidence in your valor, fidelity and good conduct, you are hereby appointed as sergeant, in the Frst Company, in said battalion, commanded by Capt. Robert Warner. You are therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the several duties of your office, and to observe and follow all such orders and directions, as shall be given to you from time to time, by your superior officers, according to the rules and discipline of war.

Given under my hand this 18th day of Jan. 1780.

W. Clift,
Maj. Comd'r."

On 4 July 1899, the Daughters of the American Revolution at Camden, New York, dedicated a monument to the men serving in the War of the Revolution, who were residents of or lived near Camden. This monument stands in the Mexico Street Cemetery.

Receiving his discharge from the Army, Daniel Parke returned to his home in Connecticut, which he established at East Hampton, or Chatham, some twelve miles away from Middletown. There several of his children were born. Thence he removed to Middle Haddam, on the Connecticut River, where he worked as a ship carpenter. While still at East Hampton, 7 July 1782, he and his wife renewed their coven-

ant (East Hampton church record, p. 44). In May, 1794, he tramped from Connecticut into the northern part of New York, then a frontier district, and located a homestead on a government grant, which had been made him for his services in the Revolution. This was about six miles from Fort Schuyler, in Oneida County, previously known as Fort Stanwix, now known as Rome. He built a log cabin, and returned to Connecticut on foot. In September, 1794, he took his family and went to New York on board his brother, Capt. John Parke's boat, the Cleantha (named for Capt. James Parke's youngest daughter, Cleantha). Arriving in New York City, they crossed town, he carrying his young son Elisha, and his wife their little daughter Fanny, an infant in arms, the remainder of the children trailing after. They sailed up the Hudson to Albany, and thence went by conveyance to Schenectady. There they hired a man with a flatboat to carry them a hundred miles up the Mohawk, Daniel Parke assisting in pushing and pulling the boat along. Finally, on the night of October 22nd they reached Fort Schuyler, well, but strangers and without money. The following morning he hired a man with an ox team and sled, for eighteen inches of snow had fallen during the night, who took them to their new home six miles away. On settling with the man for his boat, for $10.00, Parke had just 121/2 cents left. As soon as he got his family settled, he went to Utica, where he secured work, hewing timber, earning a bushel and a half of corn a day. Twice a week he walked home, fifteen miles, taking his corn with him, to help the family, of which the eldest child was then fourteen. After living thirty-seven years on this homestead the opportunity to sell to advantage presented itself, and he sold it. He then removed to Camden, New York, where he spent the remainder of his days.*

After the death of his wife, Esther, Daniel Parke married, secondly, Mrs. Catherine (Clark) Hurlburt, a widow, daughter of Joseph and Johanna Clark, formerly of Middletown, Connecticut. She died at Camden in 1840, aged 84 years, without issue, having survived her husband.

The remains of Daniel Parke, his two wives, and his children, Clarissa, Fannie, Hannah, Marshal, and George are buried in the old cemetery on Four Mile square, near Camden.

     1. Elisha7 Parke (Daniel 6 Joseph 5 Joseph 4 Nathaniel 3 Thomas 2 Robert 1), the son of Daniel and Esther (Ranney) Parke, was born in Middle Haddam, Connecticut, 27 March 1793, and baptized in the Congregational Church at East Hampton, Connecticut, 28 July 1793; he died at Mount Pulaski, Illinois, 22 August 1852.

As a child of eighteen months, he was taken by his parents to northern New York. At the age of fourteen he went to Funkston, Maryland, where he apprenticed himself to a woolen manufacturer, and learned that trade. During his stay in Funkston he was drafted to serve in the War of 1812, for which service he received a grant of land on Crooked Creek, in Schuyler County, Illinois. Later he entrusted this patent to a preacher to locate, but the patent and the preacher were never heard from again.

He married, at Rutland, New York, 10 July 1817, Abiah6 Hickox, daughter of David5 and Adah (Baldwin) Hickox, who was born 3 April 1800, and died at Mount Pulaski, Illinois, 19 Oct. 1887. Tradition says that Elisha Parke, in preparing to go home for his wedding, bought, at Funkstown, Maryland, a fine white stallion and fitted it with a saddle and bridle. Mounted on this fine horse, and dressed in a gorgeous suit of black velvet with silver buttons, he journeyed home to claim his bride.*

A SUPPLEMENT TO HOTTEN

Mr. R. Sydney Glover, Publisher, 9 Duke Street, Adelphi, London, England, announces the publication of Bristol and America: A Record of the First Settlers in the Colonies of North America, 1684-1685, a most important supplement to J. C. Hotten's Original Lists of Persons of Quality (1874). This new list insludes (sic) the "names with places of origin of more than 10,000 servants to foreign plantations who sailed from the Port of Bristol [England] to Virginia, Maryland, and other parts of the Atlantic coast. . . . from 1654 to 1685." The list has been compiled from the records of the City of Bristol by special permission of the Corporation. Mr. N. D. Harding, Keeper of the British Archives, has written the preface, and Mr. Wm. Dodgson Bowman, the well-known author of Bristol and its Associations, contributes an historical introduction. It is well known that many American pioneers sailed from the Port of Bristol, but few of them, comparatively speaking were originally from Bristol itself. These people really came from all parts of the British Isles. "Some were landed gentry who had been ruined by the Civil War (in England]." "Others were farmers, tradesmen, mechanics, and labourers." Some were leaving England "for the country's good."

The following is a tyipcal (sic) entry:

"John Oberbury of Henton in the county of Hertford milwright bound to Richard Whippy of Bristol mariner for fowre yeers in Virginia on the usual conditions"

Mr. Hotten recorded, as a general rule, merely the passengers on a given boat. This valuable record goes farther and notes the locality in the British Isles whence came the passenger. Undoubtedly many emigrants will be difinitely (sic) located through this publication. The price is eight dollars.
