     xvii. Desire, b. Dec. 28, 1847; d. Mar. 15, 1848.

Child of Benjamin and Jane C. (Wood) Haight:
xviii. Charles, b. Feb. 10, 1851; lost on Lake Michigan; unmarried.

VIII. ELIAS8 HAIGHT (Benjamin7, David6, Joseph5, Moses4-3-2, Simon1 ) was born August 24, 1830, at Millville, Orleans County, New York. He moved westward with his father's family. He married, November 6, 1855, at Antioch, Lake County, Illinois, Nancy Ann Cory, born about 1830, Marathon, New York, daughter of Benoni and Nancy Ann (Goodspeed) Cory. She died there about January 25, 1859. Later Elias Haight removed to Iowa. He enlisted in Company I, Sixteenth Regiment Iowa Infantry, at Davenport, Iowa, being mustered into the service, February 19, 1862. He was promoted, April 27, 1862, to the rank of corporal. He was taken ill with dysentery and died in a hospital near Corinth, Mississippi, July 26, 1862.(q)

Children of Elias8 and Nancy Ann (Cory) Haight:
        i. Charles E., b. Aug. 31, 1856 (Aug. 8, Pension Record) ; killed in northern Wis., Jan. 5,
           1907.
9.    ii. Luella Cecelia (known as Ella Cecelia Hale), b. Apr. 8 or 22, 1858.

IX. LUELLA CECELIA9, HAIGHT (Elias8, Benjamin7, David6, Joseph5, Moses4-3-2, Simon1 ) was born at Antioch, Lake county, Illinois, in the spring of 1858. Her grandfather's family Bible gives the date as April 22, while the pension record, based on the statements of her grandfather, when he applied for her pension, gives the date as April 8. As the Hale family, with whom she lived, understood that she was born on May 22, she has always celebrated that date. After her mother's death she lived with various relatives until after her father entered the army in 1862.(r) Then she was taken to live with Hiram Hale of Prospect Hill, Waukesha county, Wisconsin, who was appointed her guardian after her father's death. Ella Hale, as she was known, was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church at Prospect Hill, where she played the organ at church and Sunday school and sang in the choir. She attended the seminary at Rochester, Wisconsin, one year and taught school one winter. She married, October 3, 1879, Walter Fremont Dale. She has lived in Lincoln since her husband's death, but spends much of her time with one of her daughters.(s)

THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1869, STANTON COUNTY

In Nebraska a census was taken each year from 1869 to 1885. By the law of February 12, 1869, these enumerations were made in April by the precinct assessors, who certified the returns to the county clerks of their respective counties. The census law of February 19, 1885, provided for a census in June to be taken by special enumerators, the original reports to be deposited in the office of the secretary of state. By the same legislative act the census law of 1869 was repealed.(a) Only a few of these papers have been found, although many may still remain in the storage rooms of the various court houses in the state.

This enumeration of Stanton County was found in a vault of the University of Nebraska Library about ten years ago. In 1869 Canton was the only precinct in the county. Male births, April 1, 1868, to March 31, 1869, were 7; female 12. Male deaths were 5; female 8. Names for births and deaths are not given. The correct order of pages is probably 4, 1, 2, 3.

In compiling his notes Col. Soule used (1) records from the Bible of Mrs. Lucina (Saxton) Hall, presented to her by her father, Nehemiah Saxton; (2) Town Records of Shelburne, Vt.; (3) Vital Records of Vt. in Office of Secretary of State; (4) Survey of the Ishams by Homer W. The Bible, which was formerly in possession of his grandmother's sister, Mrs. Laura (Hall) Robinson, Muir, Mich., gives the data for Nehemiah5 Saxton's children as printed in Vol. X, pp. 31, 32, except that the birth of the youngest, Louisa, is given as Dec. 7. 1790, instead of Dec. 2. Lavina (1777-1778), the fourth child. is called "Zurana" in the Bible.
