Fred Irwin Archibald

Fred Irwin Archibald, advertising executive, was born at McCook, Nebraska, October 18, 1893, son of William Wallace and May (Irwin) Archibald.

He attended the University of Nebraska, College of where he is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and on August 11, 1921, was married to Edna Olson at Stromsburg.

For 14 years Mr. Archibald was advertising manager, secretary and treasurer of the Lincoln Star. He was associated with the Omaha World Herald, 4 years. He is now vice president and advertising director of the Omaha Bee-News.

He is a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the American Legion, the Chamber of Commerce, the Masons, and the Elks. During the World War he was lieutenant of artillery. Residence: Omaha.


Herman Arends

One of Otoe County's earliest settlers, Herman Arends was born in Illinois, August 26, 1855. He has been a resident of Otoe County since 1859, his family having moved here from his native state. His father, Richard Arends, was born in 1810, and died on his homestead near Syracuse, in 1874. His wife, Mary Teten, died on January 19, 1898.

Mr. Arends was educated in country schools, and has been a farmer all his life. He was married to Lizza Kastner in Otoe County on November 4, 1880. Mrs. Arends died on February 19, 1898. There are seven children, Mary, Leta, Alma, Dora, Richard, Libby and irena.

During his entire life Mr. Arends has been active in the affairs of his community. He is a member of the Lutheran Church, and takes an interested part in the development of his locality. In addition to the homestead upon which he lives he is an extensive property owner and is looked up to and respected throughout the county. Residence: Talmage.


Joseph Frank Arens

Joseph F. Arens, a lifetime resident of Nebraska, has been engaged in farming in Cedar County for many years. He was born at Bow Valley, Nebraska, May 4, 1881, the son of Theresa (Klienker) Arens, and Frank John Arens. His father was born at Westphalia, Germany, December 21, 1856, and his mother was born there May 21, 1858.

Mr. Arens is interested in civic affairs and is now serving treasurer of the local school board, is president of the Cedar County Fair Association, and secretary of the Farmers Union at Hartington. He is affiliated with Holy Trinity Catholic Church, is a member of The Neraskana Society, and is a Democrat.

On November 26, 1907, he was united in marriage with Clara Sarah Schulte at Bow Valley. Mrs. Arens whose parents were farmers, was born at Fordyce, Nebraska July 21, 1888, of German descent. Their children are, Caroline, born December 20, 1908; Arthur, born June 29, 1911; Elizabeth, born January 24, 1916; Evelyn, born May 4, 1918; and Jerome Schulte, born December 8, 1916, who is adopted. Residence: Hartington.


George Oscar Armand

George O. Armand was born at Madison, Indiana, May 16, 1895, the son of Christopher J. and Lela Vesta (Bucknell) Armand. His father, who was born at Madison, January 27, 1871, is a farmer whose ancestry is French. His mother was born at Jefferson, Missouri, May 11, 1873

Mr. Armand, who is an automobile dealer, was the owner and operator of the first bus line in Nebraska, running busses from Beatrice to Lincoln and Lincoln to Grand Island. He is active in community affairs at York, Nebraska, and holds membership in the Parent Teachers Association, the Young Men's Christian Association, the York Rotary Club, and the Nebraskana Society. He served as president of the York Commercial Club in 1920, and for six years has been a member of the board of this organization. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, holds membership in the Knights of Pythias, and in 1929 was chairman of the local Red Cross.

He married Alice Viola Headley at Beatrice, Nebraska, September 24, 1919; she was born at Beatrice, December 10, 1896, and was a teacher before her marriage. Two children were born to them: Jane, born October 9, 1924; and Wayne, born April 15, 1928. Mr. Armand is a Republican. His favorite sport is baseball and his hobby is mechanics.

Mr. Armand has been very active in the good roads movement, being chairman of the York County Good Roads Association, and a member of the Nebraska Good Roads Association. He was instrumental in organizing the Nebraska Bus Operators' Association which was responsible for bus legislation in the state. Residence: York.


Arthur Armstrong

Arthur Armstrong, hotel proprietor at Hay Springs, was born in Perth, Ontario, Canada, March 1, 1870, son of Christopher and Jane (McClellen) Armstrong. Christopher Armstrong was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, April 4, 1823, and died at Hancock, Iowa, April 14, 1913. He was a farmer, who came to the United States in 1846. His wife, Jane, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, April 11, 1836, and died at Hancock, January 11, 1912. She was the mother of 14 children, six boys and eight girls, and reared 13 of them to manhood and womanhood. Her mother died aboard the vessel on which she was coming to America, and was buried at sea.

Mr. Armstrong attended the public school and studied one year at Simpson College, Indiana, Iowa. A farmer in his earlier years, he is now the proprietor of a hotel. He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, is a Mason, an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Lions Club.

On September 3, 1902, he was married to Octavia Andrea Nelson at Hancock, Iowa. Mrs. Armstrong was born at Avoca, Iowa, September 3, 1881, of Danish descent. She is a member of the Eastern Star and is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. She is the daughter of Nels and Annie (Christensen) Nelson, and attended school at Avoea, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong are active in all civic and community work, especially those activities which are good for the morals of their community. There are two children, Marjorie Lorena, born July 26, 1903, who died October 11, 1916; and Claire Mae, born August 17, 1905. Claire is a graduate of the Hay Springs High School and has a Bachelor's degree from the State Normal School at Chadron. Residence: Hay Springs.


Bryan Manford Armstrong

Bryan Manford Armstrong, merchant, was born at Logan, Iowa, April 24, 1896, the son of Joseph Andrew and Rose (Peckinpaugh) Armstrong. His father was a farmer.

Mr. Armstrong attended the public schools of Plainview, Nebraska, and in 1913 was graduated from the high school there. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce at Valentine, Nebraska, the Rotary Club, the Parent Teachers Association, and the Presbyterian Church. He served in the United States Army during the World War and is now a member of the American Legion. His favorite sport is baseball.

Of his marriage to Florence Erma Wright, which occurred at Knoxville, Iowa, October 10, 1896, two children were born, Jack, on May 1, 1922; and Virginia, born October 23, 1923. Residence: Valentine.

Robert McDowell Armstrong

Robert McDowell Armstrong was born at Auburn, Nebraska, April 29, 1892, son of James McDowell and Eunice Eulalia (Skeen) Armstrong. James Armstrong was born at Galesburg, Illinois, September 18, 1862, and was a farmer and business man of Scotch-Irish descent. He died at San Diego, California, December 28, 1919. Eunice Armstrong was born at Nemaha, April 7, 1864, and resides at Auburn. She is the daughter of Thomas B. Skeen, one of the pioneer settlers of Nebraska in 1854, and is of Scotch descent. An active worker in the Methodist Epsicopal Church, she is a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star at Auburn.

Robert M. Armstrong attended country schools near Auburn, and the Auburn public and high school, having been graduated from the latter in 1909. He entered the University of Nebraska in the fall of 1909 and received his LL. B. June 12, 1913. He played varsity baseball one year, and is a member of Delta Chi fraternity.

His marriage to Alma Grace Plasters of Stella, Nebraska, occurred May 6, 1914. Mrs. Armstrong who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Plasters of Richardson County, attended the University of Nebraska. There are two children, Robert Eugene, born July 31, 1915, and James Lee, born March 27, 1919.

Entering the practice of law at Auburn in 1913, Mr. Armstrong was associated in practice with the late Honorable H. A. Lambert under the firm name of Lambert & Armstrong until 1921. At that time he was elected county judge of Nemaha County, holding office until 1925. He had served as city attorney from 1914 to 1921.

In 1925 he resumed private practice. He is now chairman of the Republican county central committee. He has been secretary-treasurer of the Bagley Oil and Gas Company since its organization in 1918.

In 1918 he enlisted in the Motor Transportation Corps of the United States Army as a private, and served at Camp Johnstone, Florida, and at Camp Dodge, Iowa, until discharged in 1919 with the rank of sergeant. He assisted in the registration with the first draft and was active as a four minute speaker and in Red Cross and other drives.

A charter member of the Auburn Post No. 23, American Legion, he was post commander in 1929. He was chairman of the Red Cross disaster relief committee for Nemaha County. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and was president of the Auburn organization in 1925, lieutenant governor of the Nebraska- Iowa district during 1929 and 1930; he was elected governor of the Nebraska-Iowa district 1931. In 1916 he was secretary of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of The Nebraskana Society and the National Geographic Society. A Mason, he belongs to the Royal Arch Chapter, and the Knights Templar. His social club is the Auburn Country, of which he was director several years, and president 1927-28. Golf is his chief sport, and his hobby is landscaping. Residence: Auburn.


Frederick William Arndt

Frederick William Arndt, merchant and executive, was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, May 4, 1862, son of Bernard and Dorretta (Albrecht) Arndt. Bernard Arndt, born in Hamburg, Germany, April 13, 1826, was a cigar manufacturer, who served as a sergeant in the Ohio National Guard. He died at West Point, Nebraska, December 5, 1919. His wife, Dorretta, was born in Bremen, Germany, March 15, 1829, and died at Blair, in 1911

Graduated from elementary schools in Cincinnati, Mr. Arndt attended Blair High School, and was advanced in May, 1877. He has been a resident of Nebraska sixty years, during which time he has engaged as a hardware merchant, automobile dealer and oil distributor. He is president of the Arndt-Snyder Motor Company, vice president of the Blair Building and Loan Association, and treasurer of the N-I Oil Company. He is vice president of the Nebraska Hardware Mutual Insurance Company, treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Nebraska Hardware Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

On April 8, 1886, he was married to Sophia Estelle Riddler at Blair. She was born at Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, of Scotch and English descent, and died at Blair, January 9, 1922. There were three children born to this marriage, Wilfred B., born April 12, 1887, who is an automobile salesman: Mary Josephine, born January 9, 1888, and who is an artist; and Dorrette May, born January 10, 1891, who is a singer and pianist.

Mr. Arndt is a Republican a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and The Nebraskana Society. He is a member of the Blair Golf Club.

On February 6, 1924, Mr. Arndt was married to Annie Vio Gates at Grand Island, Nebraska. She is s newspaper woman, member of the state senatorial committee, vice chairman of the Washington County central committee 1931, member of the Eastern Star for the past twenty years.

Mr. Arndt is a member of the Masons, Royal Arch Masons, and Knights Templar. Residence: Blair.


Charles Harrison Arnold

Charles Harrison Arnold, physician and surgeon, was born near Dorchester, Nebraska, October 18, 1888, son of Henry and Ann Elizabeth (Gifford) Arnold. His father, a native of Collamer, Indiana, born January 26, 1845, was a farmer in that state, and settled near Dorchester, Nebraska, in 1885. He was a member of the Christian Church, and a Republican. His death occurred at Dorchester, March 17, 1921. His wife, Ann Elizabeth, was born in Michigan, May 21, 1850, and died at Lincoln, June 5, 1925. She was a teacher in the Indiana public schools, and a member of the Christian Church. Her ancestry was English, French and Scotch.

Educated first in the country schools near Dorchester Dr. Arnold was graduated from Dorchester High School in 1908. During the year 1908 he attended Lincoln Business College, and in 1909 attended Cotner University. In 1913 he received his M.D. from the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery.

His first marriage was to Irma Carlotta Sears at Chicago, January 20, 1912. Mrs. Arnold was born at Aurora, Nebraska, September 12, 1887, and died at Lincoln, March 19, 1926. She was a graduate and registered nurse of Scotch descent. There are two children, Hubert Andrew, born November 15, 1912, who is a junior at the University of Nebraska; and Faith Elizabeth, born September 4, 1914, who is a junior in Lincoln High School.

Dr. Arnold married Mrs. Winifred Owen McCoy of Lincoln, at Colorado Springs, June 11, 1928. A life resident of Nebraska, Dr. Arnold has lived in Lincoln since 1913, when he began the practice of medicine there. For the past seven years he has confined his work to surgery. He is chief surgeon to the Dr. Benjamin F. Bailey Sanitorium, attending surgeon to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, and associate surgeon to Bryan Memorial Hospital. He is a lecturer on surgery to the Bailey Training School for Nurses, also.

In April, 1917, he entered the army and was commissioned first lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was service July, 1917, and attached to the Royal Army Medical Corps of England with which he saw service in Flanders and on the Somme; he was at the front for eight months, and was wounded in action June 1, 1918. Promoted to the rank of captain, he engaged in surgery at Base Hospital No. 3 LeTreport, France, until February, 1919. He received his honorable discharge at Camp Dix, New Jersey, in February, 1919, and now holds the rank of major in the Medical Reserves. He is a member of the Reserve Officers Association, the American

Legion, and member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A director of the Red Cross, he is past president and present director of the Lincoln Automobile Club and director of the American Automobile Association. During 1926-28 he was president of the Cosmopolitan Club. A member of the Hiram Club, he is president of the Interprofessional Club of Lincoln, a member of the Young Men's Christian Association, the Nebraska State Historical Society, the Nebraskana Society, and is listed ill Who's Who to America. His professional memberships include the American, Nebraska State and Lancaster County Medical Associations, and the Military Surgeons Association. He is a Mason, and past commander of the Knights Templar, past high priest and member of the Shrine, 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite, and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Knights of Pythias. His religious affiliation is with the First Christian Church of Lincoln. He belongs to the Lincoln University Club, Shrine Country and Shrine Golf Clubs. Residence: Lincoln. (Photograph in Album).


Ernst Arnold, Jr.

A leader in business and political affairs at Upland, Nebraska, is Ernst Arnold, ,Jr., who has lived in this state all his life. He was born at Franklin, Nebraska, April 15, 1881, the son of Caroline (Helfferich) and Ernst Arnold, the latter a farmer who served as the first sheriff of Franklin County, was county treasurer, 1908-12, and acted as county judge in the early history of the state. Ernst Arnold was born in Germany, March 2, 1848, came to America in 1870, and the following year homesteaded in Nebraska. Caroline (Helfferich) Arnold was born in France, November 11, 1850, arrived in this country in 1872, and in 1873 moved to Nebraska. Mr. Arnold was graduated from the Franklin High School in 1898, attended the Lincoln Business College, was graduated in 1900, and took a short course in an agricultural college at the State University. He served as deputy county treasurer, 1908-12, was secretary of the County Democratic Committee for a number of years, and is now treasurer of the latter organization. He is cashier of the People's Bank at Upland, holds membership in the Commercial Club there, and is treasurer of the Upland Bed Cross, president of the 3rd Nebraska Regional Clearing House Association.

During the late war Mr. Arnold acted in the capacity of legal advisor, and was prominent in all activities pertaining to home war work. He is a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Tehama Temple of the Shrine, he Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and holds membership la the Nebraskana Society.

His marriage to Bessie Gertrude Barber was solemnized at Bloomington, Nebraska, October 19, 1910; she was born at Bloomington, May 9, 1882. They have two children: Ernst, III, born January 13, 1913, and Barbara Jean, February 11, 1914, a member of the Upland High School. Residence: Upland.


Leonard E. Arnold

Leonard E. Arnold, proprietor of the Arnold Drug Company at Sutherland, was born at Stockville, Nebraska December 3, 1900, son of Henry D. and Rachel M. (Smith) Arnold.

His father, who was a carpenter, was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, July 27, 1870. His family came to America from Germany in 1796. His wife, Rachel M., was born at Fort Wayne, Indiana, June 25, 1877, of English ancestry.

Mr. Arnold attended the public schools of Stockville, and in May, 1917, was graduated from high school there. During the year 1919, Mr. Arnold attended the University of Wyoming, and on May 23, 1923, received the degree of Ph. G. from Valparaiso University. He is a life member of the National Association of Drug Clerks, having received the highest standing in chemistry, in the pharmacy department.

Mr. Arnold assumed various clerkships, including Lynch Pharmacy at Roseland, Nebraska, the Preston Drug Company at Oxford, Nebraska, the Hoopers Pharmacy at Holdrege, Nebraska, the Ogallala Drug Company, Ogallala, Nebraska. He was manager for a time of the Sievers Drug Store at Morrill, and is now time owner of his own store at Sutherland. Mr. Arnold is a Republican, has served as a member of the city council for time past three years. He is the author of Who Is To Blaine (January, 1932), published in the National Drug Clerk.

On March 13, 1925, he was married to Nora C. Miller at Smith Center, Kansas. Mrs. Arnold was born at Holstein, Nebraska, August 30, 1905, the daughter of Fred Sand and Christina (Temm) Miller. She is of German descent. They have one son, Vancen, born August 17, 1927.

Among Mr. Arnold's professional organizations are the National Association of Drug Clerks, the Nebraska Pharmaceutical Association, and the Platte Valley Pharmaceutical Association. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and has served as its president for two years. He is also a member of the Odd Fe!lows, and is district deputy grand master. At the present time, he is president of the Platte Valley Pharmaceutical Association. His favorite sports include football, fishing, and hunting, while his hobby is reading. Residence; Sutherland. Charles Arnot

Charles Arnot, son of Elisha Truesdel and Ruth Ann (Miller) Arnot, was born at Greenville, November 3, 1861. The father, a farmer and stockman, was a Democrat and a veteran of the Civil War, having served with the Confederate Army. Of Scotch descent, his grandfather, Henry Arnot, served in the Revolution. He came from Scotland and settled in Virginia, and was of the House of Balfour, and descended from Mary Queen of Scots. Ruth Ann Miller was born in Wolf Creek, West Virginia, May 7, 1831, and died at Red Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, October 29, 1903. Her husband died there on April 12, 1910. She was a teacher prior to her marriage, and was a vocalist of considerable ability. Her mother came from the north of Ireland and her father from Scotland.

Educated first in public and private schools of Virginia and West Virginia, Mr. Arnot also attended Drake University at Des Moines, Danville College at Danville, Indiana, Valparaiso College, and was graduated from Fremont Normal College in 1891. He taught school in the rural districts of Virginia one year, and in West Virginia one year. He came to Nebraska and taught in rural schools three years, village schools 11 years; served as county superintendent of Dodge County four years, city superintendent for Schuyler eight years, and on July 1, 1915, came to Scribner as cashier and manager of the First National Bank. He is still holding that position, and in 1906 organized the Logan Valley Bank at Uehling, and was its president until 1911, when he sold his interests. Mr. Arnot held the first corn growing contest in the state and while county superintendent devoted much time to organization.

A Democrat he has been active in every Democratic campaign but has held no political offices, except as county superintendent of Schools of Dodge County, as above. He was defeated for time same office in Colfax County by 16 votes in 1894.

On July 17, 1910, he was married to Mabel E. Johnson at Colorado Springs. Colorado. Mrs. Arnot was born at Fremont, November 6, 1887, and is a former
