teacher in city grade schools. They have three children: Ruth Elizabeth, born December 14, 1911, who is a student at Doane College; Charles Pemberton, born March 4, 1917, who has completed his first year in high school; and James William, born July 25, 1927.

Mr. Arnot is the author of several articles of an educational nature, and for fourteen years prior to 1915 was a member of the National Educational Association. He is especially active in community affairs, and is president of the board of directors of the Dodge County Red Cross chapter. He was a member of the commission appointed by Governor Morehead to revise the school laws of Nebraska, and represented the Third Congressional District in the Nebraska State Teachers Association six years. He is a member of the Scribner Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraskana Society and the Nebraska School Masters Club. His fraternal organizations include the Masons, Knights of Pythias, Eastern Star, Modern Woodmen of America and Woodmen of the World. He enjoys especially reading history and fiction. Leland Dill Arnot

Leland Dill Arnot, dental surgeon, was born at Johnson, Nebraska, July 8, 1900, son of Lycurgus Bernard and Mary Elizabeth (Carmine) Arnot. His father, born near Union, Monroe County, West Virginia, was a farmer. He is a great great grandson of Henry Arnot of the Revolution, who enlisted in New Jersey in 1778 and was a pensioned soldier. His mother came from Ireland and his father from Scotland. Mary Elizabeth Carmine was born on a farm near Galesburg, Illinois, February 9, 1860.

Educated in rural school to the eighth grade until May 26, 1914, Dr. Arnot was graduated from high school at Pawnee City on May 29, 1918, and received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in June, 1924, from the University of Nebraska. There he was made a member of the Green Goblins, the Iron Sphinx, Xi Psi Phi and Beta Theta Pi, of which he was steward in 1923-24.

On May 20, 1925, Dr. Arnot was united in marriage to Esther Philleo at Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Arnot was born at Wayne, Nebraska, September 14, 1905. They have one son, Leland Dill, Jr., born July 7, 1926.

Since his admission in 1924, Dr. Arnot has been actively engaged in practice. He is a member of the American, Nebraska State and Central District Dental Associations, and is serving as president of the last mentioned for the term of 1930-31. During 1925-26 he was president of the Exeter Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the city council (1928-32) and of the school board 1931-34.

Dr. Arnot's religious affiliation is with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a four minute speaker and a private in the Student's Army Training Corps at the University during the World War, and is a member of the American Legion. He is also a member of the Odd Fellows, the Nebraskana Society, the Cornhusker Dental Study Club and the University Club at Lincoln. Dr. Arnot's sport is golf and his hobby is landscaping. Herbert Arnstein

Herbert Arnstein, executive, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, July 6, 1890, son of Sigmund and Theresa Arnstein. He was graduated from Central High School in 1908, and was married to Jeanette Mayer, who was born in Lincoln, May 28, 1898 (See Nebraskana).

At the present time Mr. Arnstein is engaged in the mercantile business. He is also real estate owner and an extensive property holder and builder. He is a member of Temple Israel and the Young Men's Christian Association. Residence: Omaha.


Jeanette Mayer Arnstein

Jeanette Mayer Arnstein, who was born at Lincoln, Nebraska, May 28, 1893, is the daughter of Charles and Estelle Mayer, the former a merchant and civic leader of Lincoln, born in New York City, September 13, 1859. He was of German descent, and died in New York, December 7, 1927. Estelle Mayer was also a native of New York, born September 13, 1863. She is of German and American ancestry, and was formerly active in the social, civic and educational life of Lincoln. She now resides in New York City.

Mrs. Arnstein was graduated from Lincoln High School in 1910, and received her A. B. from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1914. She is a member of Omaha College Club, Wellesley Club and of Mu Sigma, and the National Council of Jewish Women.

She was married to Herbert Arnstein in 1913. They have three children, Margery, born August 13, 1917; Charles, born October 1, 1922, and Barbara, born December 30, 1924. She is Jewish and a member of Temple Israel. During the World War she was a civilian relief worker, and is now active in the Jewish Women's Welfare Federation, the Community Chest and the Red Cross. She is independent in politics, and is a member of the Nebraska League of Women Voters. She is president of the Omaha section of the National Council of Jewish Women (1930-32), a member of the Omaha Symphony women's committee, the Parent Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women, and the Nebraskana Society. During 1927-29 she was president of the Wellesley Club. Her sports are golf and hiking and her chief recreation is reading. Her clubs are the Omaha Athletic Club and Highland Country Club. Charles W. Aron

Charles W. Aron was born at Crete, Nebraska. June 28, 1869, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Nedela) Aron. His father, who was born in Czechoslovakia, in 1839, was a farmer who came to America in 1867, and settled at Baltimore, Maryland. Later he was married in Chicago, and homesteaded near Crete, where he died October 30, 1908. His mother was born at Msemo, Czechoslovakia, in 1845, and died at Crete, in 1900.

Mr. Aron received his education in the public schools of Saline County. He has been an active farmer for many years. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, and has served on the district school board for several terms. He has been a member of the Sokol Society for over 40 years. He is a Catholic.

His marriage to Anna Marcelino was solemnized at Crete, October 21, 1896. Mrs. Aron, who was born at Crete, November 19, 1876, is of Bohemian descent on the maternal side and Portuguese through the paternal line. Four children were born to this union, Emma, born November 6, 1897, who married William Tobiska; Otto, born December 7, 1898. who married Hazel Williams; Gertrude, born June 28, 1900, who married William Boles; and Carl, born June 17, 1902, who married Marie Conrad. Edward Fred Aron

Edward F. Aron, owner and manager of the Ama Clothes Shop at Crete, Saline County, Nebraska, has lived in this state all his life. He was born at Crete, October 21, 1881, the son of Charles and Barbara (Dolansky) Aron. His father, who was born in Czechoslovakia, June 9, 1850, and died at Crete, August 18, 1924, was a tailor and merchant for over 50 years. His mother was born in Czechoslovakia, July 8, 1851, and died at Crete, June 4, 1925.

Mr. Aron received his education in the grade and high school at Crete. He is a member of the Community Club, the Nebraska Federation of Retailers, the Allied Clothers, and the Crete Golf Club. He is affiliated with

the Methodist Church, is a Scottish Rite Mason, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. During the World War he was active in Liberty loan drives. He is a Republican.

His marriage to Frances Amelia Gilbert was solemnized at Johnson, Nemaha County, Nebraska, August 18, 1914. Mrs. Aron was born at Johnson, the daughter of French and Pennsylvania Dutch parents. Two children were born to this marriage: Charles Gilbert, born November 13, 1916; and Ruth Genevieve, born April 1, 1917, who died February 6, 1925. Residence: Crete.


Carlos Epperson Arterburn

Carlos Epperson Arterburn, banker of St. Paul Nebraska, is a lifelong resident of this state. He was born at Imperial, Nebraska, June 12, 1890, the son of Ellsworth F., and Della N. (Epperson) Arterburn. His father, a real estate dealer and abstractor, was born at Kansas, Illinois, February 3, 1862. His French, English and Scotch ancestors came to America prior to the Revolution and later served in that war. Delta N. Epperson was born at Oneida, Illinois, February 23, 1865.

Mr. Arterburn attended Nebraska Military Academy until June, 1910, and from 1910 until 1912 was a student at the University of Nebraska where be was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He played football and basketball at Nebraska Military Academy. For a number of years he has engaged in farming and stockraising at St. Paul, Nebraska, in addition to his banking activities.

From 1913 until 1930 Mr. Arterburn was connected with the St. Paul State Bank and since May, 1930, has served as vice president and chairman of the board of the St. Paul National Bank. He is a Republican.

On September 23, 1914, he was married to Pauline Virginia Paul at St. Paul, Nebraska. Mrs. Arterburn was born at St. Paul, February 3, 1894, of Scotch and English ancestry. They have one son, Carlos Paul, born February 18, 1927.

Mr. Arterburn served as adjutant in the 134th Infantry during the World War. He is a member of the American Legion, the St. Paul Community Club, the Red Cross, and the Masons (Jordan Chapter No. 27, Knights Templar No. 23 of St. Paul, Lincoln Consistory of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Shrine of Hastings). His social club is the Lincoln University Club while his favorite sports are hunting and fishing. Residence: St. Paul.


Carrie Arthur

Carrie Arthur, a lifetime resident of Dodge County, Nebraska, has taken an active part in the business and social world for many years. She was born near Scribner, Dodge County, Nebraska, July 30, 1866, the daughter of James Bard and Caroline (Stoughton) Robinson. Her father, who was born in Union County, Pennsylvania, January 18, 1821, and died at North Bend, Dodge County, Nebraska, February 20, 1907, was a pioneer Nebraskan, and was for many years a miller, merchant, farmer, tavern keeper, and freighter. Her mother, who was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, November 16, 1824, and died at Pebble, Dodge County, Nebraska, October 12, 1884, was a pioneer home maker who knew the perils of Indian warfare and the hardships of the early settlers; she assisted her husband in managing his hotel and was active in church and community work.

Mrs. Arthur attended school at Pebble. She is the sole owner of the Arthur Furniture Company, a furniture and undertaking establishment which she manages with the assistance of her son-in-law. E. J. Spear. She holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross, time Nebraskana Society , and the Methodist Church of Scribner. Her hobby is reading. Her political affiliation is with the Democratic Party.

She was united in marriage with Thomas L. Arthur at Pebble, March 5, 1884. Mr. Arthur, who was born at Deer Park, LaSalle County, Illinois, June 5, 1853, and died at Scribner, July 8, 1899, was a farm owner in Dodge County for many years. Two children were born to their union: Ray, born May 30, 1885, who died June 2, 1885; and Lou Belle, born April 14, 1887, who married Edward J. Spear. Mr. Spear is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a Royal Highlander, and a Mason. He has taken an active part in civic affairs and is a Democrat. Mr. and Mrs. Spear have one son, Gifford Arthur, who was born in Scribner, September 27, 1911. A graduate of Scribner High School, he later attended college in Chicago. He is fond of athletics and intends to follow the undertaking and furniture business. Lou Belle was a teacher in the public schools for a time and is now prominent in civic work at Scribner. She does the clerical work in her mother's store; her husband, who is a licensed embalmer and funeral director, is manager of the Arthur Furniture Company. Residence: Scribner. Elmer Ward Artist

Elmer Ward Artist, county treasurer of Dundy County, was born in Dewitt, Nebraska, May 7, 1883, son of Jacob William and Laura Isabelle (Mathews) Artist.

His father was born in Iowa, March 8, 1856, and died at Benkelman, August 30, 1924. He was a farmer, and also served as county assessor of Dundy County. His ancestry was English. Laura Isabelle Mathews was born at Huntington, Indiana, February 27, 1861, of German descent.

Mr. Artist attended Benkelman Public, and Duane Preparatory School at Crete.

For 22 years, he was engaged in farming, and for the past five years, has been county treasurer of Dundy County. He is also the owner of a service station at Benkelman. He is a Republican.

On December 25, 1907, he was married to Alta May Frasier at Benkelman. She was born there, on February 28, 1887, of French and Scotch Candian (sic) descent. Four children were born to them, three of whom are living, Leta Laura, born May 16, 1911; Lila Pearl, born April 12, 1914; Elmer Jacob, born November 11, 1917; and Lucille, born April 24, 1921, who died August 24, 1924.

Mr. Artist attends the Methodist Episcopal Church and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Odd Fellows, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, joining the Odd Fellows in 1915, and the Workmen, 1907. Residence: Benkelman.


Albert Atchie Ashby

Albert Atchie Ashby, prominent physician and surgeon of Fairmont, Nebraska, was born at Mount Carroll, Illinois, November 3, 1891, the son of Charles I. and Effie (Thompson) Ashby. His father, who is a farmer, was born at Mount Carroll; his ancestors came to this country from England, prior to the Revolution. His mother was born at Mount Carroll, and died at Mount Carroll, Illinois in 1928.

Dr. Ashby was active in basketball, baseball, and track during his school days. He was admitted to the practice of medicine at Chicago Homeopathic Medical College Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, where he was elected to membership in Pi Upsilon Rho Fraternity. He was a member of the medical firm, Drs. Ashby & Ashby at Fairmont, until 1924, since which time he has practiced medicine alone. At present, he is examining physician for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad there.

A Republican, he has served as county chairman of various political committees in Fillmore County. He is a member of the school board, Commercial Club, and the following professional organizations: American Medical Association; Nebraska State Medical Society; American Association of Railroad Surgeons. coln, Nebraska, also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

During the World War he served as first lieutenant of the Medical Corps, Fort Riley, Kansas, and captain of the Reserves, Camp Devens, Massachusetts. He was commanding hospital officer at Scituate Proving Grounds, Scituate, Massachusetts, for three months. He is now a member of the American Legion. His favorite sport is baseball, and his hobby is overseeing his farms.

Dr. Ashby was married at Independence, Missouri, to Gertrude Ferg, October 29, 1918. Mrs. Ashby, who was a laboratory technician for the City of Topeka, Kansas, before her marriage, was born at Hepler, Kansas, September 20, 1894. Mrs. Ashby was graduated from the Kansas University in 1917. She was instructor at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kansas. To them were born two children: Charles Ferg, February 9, 1920; and Sherman Francis, April 12, 1923. Residence: Fairmont.


George W. Ashford

George W. Ashford, banker and farmer at Homer, Nebraska, was born there July 13, 1875, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Duggan) Ashford. His father, who was a farmer, was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, and died at Homer, April, 1907. His mother was born in County Cork, Ireland, and died at Homer, Nebraska, in April 1916.

Mr. Ashford was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1899 with the degree Ph. G. He is president of the Security State Bank of Homer at the present time, and is active in civic affairs at Homer. He holds membership in the Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America, Knights of Columbus, the Nebraskana Society, and the Red Cross. He is affiliated with St. Cornelius Catholic Church and is a member of the Democratic Party. His hobby is horses.

On December 15, 1908, he was married to Catherine McLaughlin at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska; she was born at Lincoln February 22, 1878. They have four children: William, born July 21, 1909; Catherine, born August, 1910; Helen, born September 2, 1913; and Louise, born July 20, 1918. Residence: Homer.


Edwin Johnson Askwig

Edwin J. Askwig, who has been an auctioneer in Nebraska for the past 32 years, has lived in this state all his life, and has been prominent in all civic affairs. He was born at Tekamah, Nebraska, July 10, 1867, the son of James and Dorthea Anne (Tue) Askwig. His father, who was a farmer, was born at LaSalle, Illinois, June 3, 1840, and died at Oakland, Nebraska, September 4, 1917. He was of Norwegian ancestry. His mother was born at Racine, Wisconsin, May 10, 1847, and died at Oakland, September 11, 1916.

Mr. Askwig attended the public schools of Oakland. For over 32 years he has been engaged in the livestock auctioneering business, and is now connected with the Surety National Company at Oakland. During the World War he sold Liberty bonds; was active in all war drives; and was a director for the Red Cross, raising $250,000 for the latter.

He is a member of all branches of the Masons, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society and the Burt County Historical Society. He has always been a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, and is a Democrat.

His marriage to Jennie Amelia Krogh was solemnized at Oakland, September 26, 1888. Mrs. Askwig, who was born at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, December 3, 1866, was a teacher before her marriage. Residence: Oakland.


John Albert Aspegren

Since the spring of 1878, John Albert Aspegren has been a resident of Lincoln. He was born at Osco, Illinois, September 10, 1874, the son of Gust and Anna Lovis (Erickson) Aspegren. His parents were natives of Sweden, the former born January 31, 1844, and the latter October 16, 1853. The father, who was a farmer, died at Saronville, Nebraska, May 12, 1930.

John A. Aspegren attended country school and was graduated from Lincoln Normal University with the degree of B.D. in 1895. On February 4, 1903, he was married to Lettie C. Benson at Hastings. Mrs. Aspegren is a native of Friend. Three children were born to this union, two of whom are living: Lillian, born November 18, 1903, married Otto E. Skald; Hugo, born August 1, 1915; and Sandford, born January 1, 1904, died April 11, 1915.

Since early manhood Mr. Aspegren has been engaged in the lumber and coal business. He now has extensive interests and is president of the Independent Lumber and Coal Company of Lincoln, and secretary and treasurer of the Aspegren and Strand Lumber Company of Saronville, and the Doniphan Lumber Company of Doniphan, Nebraska. He is a director of all three corporations. An Elk and a Mason, he is a member of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. His hobbies are reading and travel. Residence: Lincoln.


Wilber Stremmel Aten

Wilber Stremmel Aten, lawyer at Holdrege, Nebraska, was born at Ragan, Nebraska, May 19, 1903, the son of Wilber William and Eliza Elizabeth (Stremmel) Aten. His father, a retired farmer and stockman, was born at Rushville, Illinois, December 19, 1872, of Scotch ancestry. His mother, also born at Rushville, is a member of the Woman's Club. She is of German descent.

Mr. Aten attended the public schools of Nodaway County, Missouri, and in 1920 was graduated from the Holdrege High School. He received the LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska, 1924, where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta. He has been associated with Clarence A. Davis, former attorney-general of Nebraska, in the practice of law at Holdrege, since July 1, 1924.

He holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Kiwanis Club, and the Lincoln University Club. He is a member of DeMolay, and is Past Master of the Masons. His sports include golfing and tennis.

On June 29, 1927, he was married to Irma Yolanda Hulquist, at Holdrege. Mrs. Aten, who was formerlya teacher, was born in Chicago, October 2, 1903. Mr. Aten was nominated for county attorney of Phelps County, Nebraska, in 1926. Residence: Holdrege. (Photograph in Album).


Wilber William Aten

Wilber William Aten, who has been engaged in the real estate and farm loan business at Holdrege, Nebraska, for many years was born at Rushville, Illinois, December 19, 1871. His father, John Calvin Aten, a farmer, was born in Pennsylvania, of Scotch parentage, September 1, 1842, and died at Ragan, Nebraska, March 19, 1925. Isabelle Trimble, his mother, was born in Scotland, in January, 1846, and was an active church and Sunday School worker for many years; she died at Ragan, September 29, 1926.

Mr. Aten came to Ragan, where he was a farmer and stock shipper, also owned a butcher shop, and was interested in elevators until 1911. He moved to Cozad, in 1912, into Missouri, in 1913, came back to Nebraska, April 5, 1916, locating at Holdrege, and since that time has been one of the most important civic leaders in this section of the state.

He deals in insurance, farm loans and real estate at Holdrege, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and holds membership in the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and

the Methodist Episcopal Church. His social club is the Holdrege Country Club. A Republican, he is serving as county chairman and state committeeman of that party.

He was united in marriage with Eliza Elizabeth Stremmel, at Rushville, Illinois, November 17, 1892. Mrs. Aten, who was a teacher and seamstress before her marriage, was born at Rushville, July 15, 1871. Their children are: Florence, born April 4, 1896, who married John Langford Gilmore; Wilber, born May 19, 1903, who married Irma Yolanda Hulquist; and Paul, born October 6, 1911. Wilber is a prominent attorney at Holdrege, (see Nebraskana). Paul is a sophomore in the University of Nebraska. Residence: Holdrege. (Photograph in Album).


Fred Marshall Attebury

Fred Marshall Attebury, cattle rancher, was born at Crete, Nebraska, October 13, 1882, son of Willis and Mary Bell (Mausey) Attebury. His ancestry is English and Scotch.

Upon his graduation from Crete High School in 1902, Mr. Attebury attended Doane College for about a year.

He is a registered druggist in Nebraska and Wyoming, and at the present time is a rancher and cattle feeder. He is a Republican, and a 32nd degree Mason.

His marriage to Myrrh Beatrice Hanson was solemnized at Cheyene (sic), Wyoming, September 6, 1907. Mrs. Attebury was born at Sundance, Wyoming, January 1, 1866. They have two children, Mildred, born July 24, 1915; and Ruth, born October 22, 1922. Residence: Mitchell.


Norman Harry Attwood

Norman Harry Attwood, physiologist and anatomist, was born at Omaha, December 23, 1885. He is the son of James and Anna (Hussie) Attwood, the former a native of Toddington Bedfordshire, England, born November 30, 1851. He was a liverymen and engaged in the retail hardware business with the John Hussie Hardware Company. He came to America in 1867 and located on the Brewster farm at Irvington, Nebraska, later moving to Omaha. He died at Hawthorne, California, January 14, 1931. His wife, Anna Hussie, was born at Chicago, on May 15, 1863. She taught in district school at French Town, Nebraska, and at Neligh, Nebraska. She was also a teacher of art and music in Omaha. Her father was a moulder in the Union Pacific Shops and later engaged in the hardware business in Omaha for 45 years.

Dr. Attwood attended Holy Family School in Omaha, and St. James in Chicago. Later he entered Creighton Preparatory and received his M. D. from Creighton University in 1920. He is a member of Phi Rho Sigma. From 1904-12 he was a salesman for the John Hussie Hardware Company. Since 1920 he has been a practicing physician, and since 1921 professor of physiology at Creighton Dental College. He is also professor of physiology and anatomy at the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, at Omaha.

He was married to May Hyacinth Jacobson at Omaha, on August 7, 1920. Mrs. Attwood was born at Omaha, May 1, 1887. She is of Danish descent. Dr. Attwood served as a private in the medical corps of the Creighton Student Army Training Corps during the World War. He is a member of the American Legion, and a captain in the Reserve Officers of the Medical Corps, and captain medical department detachment 134th Infantry.

He is a Catholic, and a member of the Holy Name Church. He is a member of the Creighton Alumni Association, a member of the staff of St. Joseph's and Lord Lister Hospitals. He belongs to the American Chemical Association, the Woodmen of the World, and The Nebraskana Society. His favorite sport is riding. His hobby is mechanics Residence: Omaha.


Raymond Harold Atwood

A leading insurance executive, Raymond Harold Atwood was born and reared at Chester, Nebraska. He was born on August 26, 1880, the son of Sydney DeLoss and Alice Julia (Guile) Atwood. His father, born at Lake Mills, Wisconsin, was an early settler in Nebraska, and was a director of school district No. 54 from 1879-80. A merchant, farmer and educator, he was Chester's first schoolmaster. His death occurred at Corvallis, Oregon, May 14, 1924. His wife, who was also born at Lake Mills, on December 10, 1856, is living.

Mr. Atwood attended Chester High School, graduating in 1898, and was graduated from Doane Academy in 1900. In 1906 he was awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau. He was a letterman at Doane in 1900 and at Nebraska Wesleyan in 1906.

During the year 1907 Mr. Atwood was a merchant in Lincoln, and from 1908-09 was a salesman for the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company. From 1909 to 1914 he was a merchant at Chambers, Nebraska, and from 1914-28 engaged in the lumber business at Chester. He is secretary at the present time of the Missouri Valley Life Insurance Company of Lincoln, a director of the Citizens Lumber and Supply Company of Chester, and director of the Missouri Valley Life Insurance Company.

Mr. Atwood is a Master Mason, and belongs to Chester Lodge No. 298, and Council No. 79. He is a member of the United Commercial Travelers, a member of the committee of the local Red Cross, and president of the Chester Community Club. His religious affiliation is with the Chester Methodist Church, and at present he is corresponding secretary of the Chester Young Men's Christian Association. He belongs to the Chester Parent Teacher Association and School District No. 54, and was president of the latter, 1927-28.

During the 1916-18 Mr. Atwood was a second lieutenant in the Chester Home Guard, and from 1914-18 was chairman of Minute Men. He is a Republican.

On June 12, 1906, he was united in marriage to Edith Belle Fellers of DeWitt, their marriage being solemnized at Chester. Mrs. Atwood was born March 5, 1884. There are three children, Pauline, born August 16, 1907, who is principal in the public school at Alexandria; Juliet, born March 15, 1910, who is principal in Thayer, Nebraska, and Raedith, born November 30, 1916. Arthur Jay Auble

Arthur Jay Auble, son of William Lewis and Mattie (Peterson) Auble, was born at Ord, Nebraska, March 30, 1889. His father, born at Newton, New Jersey, November 25, 1857. His grandfather served in the Civil War with the Union Army, and was in the band through the entire war. His father, a farmer, was one of the early settlers in Valley County, where he reared a family of five children, giving all of them a common school education.

His wife, Mattie, was born in Barry, Illinois, in July, 1854. A teacher and an old time singing instructor, she is now active in religious work. Her family settled early in Illinois, her father driving an ox team to the coast in 1849, came back across the Isthmus of Panama to New York, where he had his gold coined. A brother served in the Union Army in the Civil War.

Educated in public school, Arthur Jay Auble excelled in pole vaulting and made a broad jump of 19 feet three inches. A farmer until 1907, he was the owner of an orange grove in California, until July, 1908. He studied watch repairing until the spring of 1909, when he opened a jewelry store at Wolbach. This was sold in the spring of 1910, and the next year was spent with a brother on his farm in Winner, South Dakota. In March, 1911, Mr.
