Mr. Harman was graduated from the Tecumseh High School, May 28, 1905. He has had the following experence in the business world: clerk for the Burlington Railroad at Omaha, 1905-06; clerk for the Lee Glass Hardre Company, 1906-08; assistant for the B. L. Dodder Funeral Directors, 1909-11; assistant for the W. W. Scott Funeral Firm, Beatrice, 1912-22. In 1921 he organized the Scott-Harman Funeral Directors which since 1926 has been Harman-Johnson.

He acted as vice president of the Kiwanis Club at its organization, served as a member of the board of directors of the Young Men's Christian Association at Beatrice, 1924-7, and is now a member of the Nebraskana Society and the Beatrice Country Club. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church at Beatrice, is a member of the Republican party, and holds membership in the Masons. He is a member of Beatrice Lodge Number 26, of the latter organization, Raboni Livingston Chapter Number 10, Rabonia Council Number 9, and Mt. Hermon Commandery Number 7. He likes to golf; his hobby is philately.

His marriage to Jennie Tombrinck was solemnized at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, June 26, 1912. Mrs. Harman, who is a trained nurse, was born at Omaha, January 16, 1889. Their two children are: John Sinclair, born November 17, 1913; and Sarah Elizabeth, born December 13, 1915. Residence: Beatrice.


August Henry Harms

For more than fifty years August H. Harms has been engaged in the mercantile business in Hooper. He was born in Oldenburgh, Germany, April 5, 1856, the son of Gerhard and Anna Sophie (Schraeder) Harms. Gerhard Harms was born in Streck, Oldenburgh, Germany, April 1, 1817, and died at Hooper, September 18, 1895. He was a pioneer farmer who came to Nebraska, April 4, 1870. His wife, Anna, was born in Hatten, Oldenburgh, Germany, December 31, 1821, and died at Hooper, October 9, 1905.

August Harms was educated in the rural schools of Germany, and came to America with his parents at the age of fourteen. A shoemaker and watchmaker, he has been a merchant since 1880. He is a Lutheran, a member of the Maccabees, and of the Nebraskana Society. He was married to Anna B. Bodewig, at Fremont, March 26, 1883. Mrs. Harms was born in East Prussia, Germany, October 27, 1863.

They have had nine children, seven of whom are living: Gerhard, born March 14, 1884, died February 17, 1890; Anna M. S., born August 29, 1885, married H. P. Dressen; Minnie A., born September 12, 1887, died February 6, 1890; Harry F., born January 7, 1890; Barbara A., born January 24, 1892; Coletta H., born March 7, 1894, married F. L. Hoskinson; August F., born March 22, 1896, married Louise Reviellac; Jerome P., born February 10, 1898, married Eleanore Spheeler; and Gordon J., born November 20, 1903, married Mary Bates. Residence: Hooper.


Charles W. W. Harms

Charles W. W. Harms, physician, was born at Kansas City, Kansas, September 5, 1889, son of Charles Christian and Mary (Seng) Harms. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1912, his master's degree in 1914 and his medical degree in 1914 from the University of Nebraska.

On September 4, 1926, he was married to Velma V. Rains at Wahoo. She was born at McPherson, Kansas, March 16, 1903. There is one daughter, Marilyn Jean, born June 8, 1930.

From 1914 until 1917 Dr. Harms practiced in Omaha.

He served with Hospital Train No. 45, in the American Expeditionary Forces with the rank of first lieutenant in the World War, and since 1919 has been in practice in Lincoln. He is a Republican.

He is a member of the American Legion, the American, Nebraska State and Lancaster County Medical Associations, the Military Surgeons of America, the Royal Arch Masons, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Nebraska Academy of Sciences. Residence; Lincoln.


William Michael Harnan

William Michael Harnan, rancher, was born in Springfield, Illinois, October 12, 1868, son of William and Mary (Halligan) Harnan. The father was born in County Queen, Ireland, March 17, 1817, and died at Woodriver, Nebraska, April 27, 1898. He was a farmer whose Irish ancestors came to America in 1828. Mary Halligan was born at Port Arlington, Ireland, October 20, 1834, and died at Wood River, Nebraska, on November 23, 1893.

Educated in country schools, Mr. Harnan was a farmer until the age of 21, and since that time has been a rancher. He owned a ranch 40 miles south of Cody, Nebraska, 40 miles from a railroad, and resided there from 1890 to 1923, when he moved into Gordon. He still maintains some ranching interests.

He was married on December 26, 1900, to Mary Matilda Russell at Valentine. Mrs. Harnan was born at Whiting, Iowa, November 24, 1874, and died at Gordon, January 31, 1928.

Mr. Harnan is a Democrat. He is a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church at Gordon, the Knights of Columbus, and the Modern Woodmen of America. His favorite sport is fishing. Residence: Gordon.


Dana Earl Harper

Dana Earl Harper was born at Beaver City, Nebraska, October 3, 1897, the son of Ross J. and Margaret (Jones) Harper. His father, who was a lawyer, was born at Kokomo, Indiana, February 21, 1867.

Mr. Harper way graduated from the Beaver City High School in 1916, and in 1921 received the LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska where he held membership in Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Alpha Delta. He has been engaged in the practice of law at Gothenburg, Nebraska, since 1921. He is a Democrat.

On June 19, 1921, he married Florence Mae Smith at Dorchester, Nebraska. She is the daughter of Thomas B. and Millie (Benedict) Smith. Their three children are: Patricia Lou, born in 1924; Shirley May, born in 1926; and Jerry Dana, born in May, 1931. Residence: Gothenburg.


Harry W. Harper

Harry W. Harper, automobile dealer, was born at Newburg, Iowa, February 1, 1879, son of Thomas and Olive (Brown) Harper. The father, a carpenter and farmer, died at Fort Dodge, Iowa, in February, 1886, while his wife, Olive, who was born at Worcester, Massachusetts, October 13, 1837, is still living.

On July 8, 1900, Mr. Harper was married to Linda L. Mann at Valentine. They have five children, Eva Allen, Harrison, Douglas, and Stephen.

Mr. Harper has been a resident of Nebraska for thirty-six years, and at the present time is the owner of the Harper Automobile Company. He is a member of the Odd Fellows, and was recently elected to membership in the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Valentine.

James Joseph Harrington

James Joseph Harrington, lawyer and former judge of the district court, was born at Lindsey, Ontario, Canada, October 29, 1868. He is the son of John and Margaret (Carroll) Harrington, the former a farmer. John Harrington was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, and immigrated to Canada as a young man. He died at Lindsey in 1897.

His mother, born in County Tipperary, Ireland, died at O'Neill, Nebraska. James J. Harrington attended the Lindsey Separate School, was graduated from high school in 1886, and came to the United States on January 23, 1887. A graduate of the Omaha Commercial College in 1889, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Michigan in 1894.

In June of that year he was admitted to the bar at O'Neill, Nebraska, and from 1900 until 1912 served as judge of the district court for the 15th judicial district. At that time he retired to resume the active practice of law. Judge Harrington is a Democrat.

He was married on October 26, 1898, to Minnie E. Daly at O'Neill. Mrs. Harrington, who was born at Washburn, Illinois, December 13, 1873, confines her activities to her home and family. They have one daughter, Helen T., born August 1, 1899, who is married to Earl F. Buelow. She was graduated from St. Mary's Academy at O'Neill, and from the University of Nebraska with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Mr. Buelow, who is a lawyer, is district attorney at Racine, Wisconsin, where they reside.

Judge Harrington has always been prominent in his community. At the time he was elected judge he was only 31 years of age, the youngest district judge ever to have been elected at that time in the state. He has been president of the Holt County Bar Association since 1900, is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Red Cross, the Commercial Club, the Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America and the Royal Highlanders.

A Catholic, Judge Harrington is a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoys golf and hiking, and holds membership in the O'Neill Country Club. He is a life member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: O'Neill. (Photograph on Page 512).


Arthur Trevenning Harris

Arthur Trevenning Harris, one of Nebraska's most distinguished physicians, surgeons and Xray specialists, was born at Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa, August 22, 1894. His father, Robert Osborn Harris, who was a building contractor, was born at Marazion, England, April 6, 1856, and at the age of twenty-four removed to South Africa, where his death occurred on May 5, 1898. His mother, Lydia Dinah Elliott, was born in Trapps Valley, South Africa, October 23, 1860. Her father was of Scotch descent while her mother was Irish.

Dr. Harris attended the Victoria High School at Grahamstown, and in 1912 entered Rhodes University division of the University of South Africa. He was awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1919, at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was awarded honors in anatomy and histology in college, and is now a specialist in X-ray. Dr. Harris Practiced in South Africa before coming to the United States, and was roentgenologist and pathologist to the Methodist Hospital at Gary, Indiana, prior to his residence in Nebraska. He is the owner and operator of an X-ray and physiotherapy laboratory at Hastings, at the present time.

He is the author of Prenatal Diagnosis of Anencephaly with Spina Bifida, published in the American Journal of Roentgeno logy and Radium Therapy (1929), Duodenal Diverticula (1932), is an honorary member of the Adams County Medical Society, and a member of the American Medical Association. He also holds membership in the Nebraskana Society, the Kiwanis Club, the National Geographic Society and St. Mark's Cathedral. He is interested in birbs (sic), and is serving as president of the Brooking Bird Club. His favorite sport in hiking, and his hobby, ornithology.

During 1916-17, Dr. Harris served with the rank of second lieutenant with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, with service in Egypt and Salonica. Thereafter from 1921-28, he was surgeon to St. John's Ambulance Association at Cape Town, and from 1922-28, held the rank of captain in the South African Medical Corps.

He has three children: Marjorie Trevenning, born October 3, 1920; Sheila Trevenning; born May 5, 1922, and Derek Trevenning, born September 17, 1923.

On November 4, 1931, he was married to Helen Elizabeth Chick, daughter of the late Ferdinand and Mrs. Mary Chick of Hastings. She received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Nebraska in 1926. Residence: Hastings. (Photograph in Album).


George Arthur Harris

Born at Piasa, Illinois, August 7, 1871, George Arthur Harris has been a Nebraska physician since 1895. He is the son of William Johnson and Louise Ann Brailey Harris, the former a Canadian. William Harris born at Frankford, Ontario, December 28, 1848, was a physician of Welch descent, who died at Beatrice on January 25, 1901. His wife was born at Concord, Massachusetts, July 28, 1848, and died at Beatrice on May 26, 1920.

George Arthur Harris attended Beatrice public and high schools, and was a student and member of Phi Rho Sigma at the University of Illinois. During his 39 years residence in Nebraska he has been in active practice most of the time, and during 1915-16 was a major in the Medical Corps. He is a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Shrine, a member of the Valley Commercial Club, The Nebraskana Society and the Methodist Church.

On March 29, 1916, he was united in marriage to Grace Mary Coy at Waterloo, Nebraska. Mrs. Harris was born at Greenwich, New York, June 19, 1878. They have one son, William Donald, born February 23, 1901.

Dr. Harris is a Republican. His favorite sports are fishing and hunting, while his hobby is cabinet work. Residence: Valley.


Maud Enid Harris

Maud Enid Harris, clubwoman, was born at Birmingham, Iowa, March 14, 1871, daughter of Anthony Wayne and Eliza Jane (Camblin) Walmer. Her ancestry is English, Holland Dutch and Welsh, in America for several generations.

Maud Enid Walmer attended public and high schools at Leavenworth, Kansas, and was graduated from high school at Holdrege, Nebraska, in 1890. She has done much institute and Chautauqua work, and has studied at home extensively.

On September 18, 1895, she was married to Royal Lory Harris at Holdrege. Mr. Harris was born near Oskaloosa, Iowa, June 19, 1868. There are six children, Florence Eleanor, born January 6, 1897, who married Burk White; Clarence Edgar, born February 2, 1899, who died March 22, 1899; Ernest Elton, born September 7, 1900, who married Irene Mae Boag; Samuel Sterling, born September 29, 1902, who married Vesta King; Miriam Maud, born October 28, 1905, who married William Lowell Wooding; and Sherman Wayne, born January 28, 1909.

Mrs. Harris is a Republican. She and her husband are the owners of a large farm, but are now retired. She is county president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and active in club and cultural work. Residence: Alliance.
