Qualifications for Admission to Different Fraternities

Picture/label or sketch   Alpha Theta Chi--A sleepy disposition, a knowledge of graft, a patient bearing, and a readiness and willingness to wait-without complaint--a national charter expected in 1947.
Alpha Tau Omega--A dress suit, a box of cigarettes, and a simple look.
Beta Theta Pi--Most liberal fraternity in existence. Merely the price of the initiation fee. Application blanks furnished upon application. Address Merle Howard, Station A.
Delta Tau Delta--Governors, congressmen, senators, and bankers' sons a specialty. Aristocratic and exclusive bearing a necessity. Prospective members must furnish certified copy of family tree. and a statement of how much money "dad" has.
Delta Upsilon--A letter of introduction and a speedy acceptance. Ability to elude bill collectors and a knowledge of 'Fifth" ward political methods will also be in favor of the candidate. "Quantity. not quality," our motto.
Kappa Sigma--A tremendous thirst, a hard past, and a fondness for the Alpha Phis.
Phi Kappa Psi--Love for the women, a weak eye, and a tender heart.
Phi Gamma Delta--A disposition that can tolerate Kappas and Pi Phis.
Phi Delta Theta--A flannel shirt, cob pipe, plow shoes, and the ability to bluff. Our new mansion, which we have been building for the past fifteen years, will probably be started within the next six years, but until that time we need some young but experienced bluffers to help us keep up our past record.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon--A wicked eye, a corkscrew, and a strong arm. A new set of poker chips will also be of material benefit to the aspiring candidate.
Sigma Chi--A pompadour and a clean shirt, a friend or relative in Seward or Plattsmouth.
Sigma Nu--Perfection in etiquette, and the art of talking a great deal and yet at the same time saying nothing. A stand-in with one of the charter members.
Sigma Phi Epslion--Political aspirations, and a job in the Military Department.

Extracts from the New Edition of Baird's Manual

KAPPA SIGMA--it is claimed by the members of this fraternity that the first Kappa Sig was no other than King Solomon. who lived a few years before Europe was discovered. For this reason, they contend, it is explained why they have so many chapters throughout the United States: the dead ones across the "big pond" having been revived on this side. To gain a charter of Kappa Sigma, the only thing necessary is for the boarding club applying to send in a quarter to the Grand Officers, and a charter is sent back by return mail with a box of cigars. Their official badge is a star within a crescent, which symbolizes their motto: "We won't come home until morning."
DELTA TAU DELTA--These gentlemen claim to have the honor of owning, and keeping in repair more dress suits than any other fraternity (at Nebraska). They also have a bulldog and a number of men who try out each year for the baseball team. In fact, their efficiency at the game, at one time, became so great that they were arrested in order to give some of the other players on the Varsity a chance.

BETA THETA PI--At one time this fraternity was just like any other Greek letter organization, but one night Merle Howard called himself together in a meeting and elected himself president, vice-president. secretary. treasurer. and board of managers; he then smote the table a terrible blow with the gavel, and issued an edict to the effect that "Beta Theta Pi henceforth and hereafter shall become a Freshman society and a matrimonial bureau."
ALPHA TAU OMEGA--The Alpha Taus claim to be the Social lions, especially at Nebraska. They contend that it costs money to "fuss," but so long as many people have been known to live on one hamburger a day, for months at a time, they can do these things.
They are also wonderfully (cheap) advertisers in the newspapers in regard to burglars being chased out of their house by some of the brave members.
PHI GAMMA DELTA--Noted as being the most marvelous "hot air vendors" now in captivity. They are often seen in vast droves on the Campus, discussing political affairs (how they will do it next time). They also boast of having a delegate every hour at the gate where the "smokers' convention" is held (sometimes two or three). Most prominent members are Willa Speier and Elsa Harmon.
PHI DELTA THETA--Recently divided into two distinct fraternities. One part affiliating with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and the other becoming an agricultural organization. They boast of a large number of good men that have graduated from college (some time in the eighties).
PHI KAPPA PSI--These gentlemen claim the only fraternity that has succeeded in interpreting the interfraternity council rulings, just as they are. They claim that the other fraternities have put a wrong construction on most of the rulings, and that they intend to set them right. Motto--"It is better to be right than to be President."
SIGMA PHI EPSILON--They are noted for being the "sorority house models" on Sunday afternoons, and for forcing their way into the political game. Their motto is "A new broom sweeps clean."
ALPHA THETA CHI--A P. B. K., a job on the Lincoln Daily Star, a boast of Dean Pound of Harvard, and you have it. These men are also noted for entering the political game once in a while, and having every one else "up on their ear" about it. One of the biggest members of this fraternity is "Tubby" Buol. Their motto is: "Hurrah for our side."

SIGMA NU--Their policy is, "house parties make friends," and they act on this theory about once a week or more, so we are told. They also have the political game down to a point where they can elect one of their members president of the Junior class most any time they feel like it. They have secretly pledged Florence Hill.
DELTA CHI--They claim Blackstone as being the first member of their fraternity, though they do not like to be called a professional organization. It is said they put on a few first-class initiating stunts a while back, but whether they took well with a few sororities at Nebraska it will not be well to state here.
DELTA U.--Since our last edition we learn that this organization has become a real fraternity with Bill Bates at the head of it. It seems before this time it was merely a club to go on bathing trips (see Jack Abbott). It would be impossible to give the most prominent members of this fraternity because they change so often; however, some of the most active ones are Marie Douglas, Florence Schwake, and Helen Halloway.
SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON--A strong back, football player, and a good fellow on November 25, 1911, and you have a good idea of a gentleman belonging to this organization. They have a new house which they say they paid for themselves. Two of the pledges are: Ruth Nichols and Kitty Mockett.
SIGMA CHI-- Noted for their exclusiveness. They admit they have a good fraternity, and therefore do not have to mix around with other fraternities that might in some way taint their good name. "Bob" Furgeson will gladly give you all the information asked for on these points, and. sometimes a little you don't ask for.
KAPPA ALPHA THETA--This organization was formerly founded as a royal order of P. B. Ks., but recently the whole idea of the sorority has been changed. Instead of P. B. K. it is a frat pin of any kind. Some of the best known members are Imogene Clark, Bob Reddish, Thad Saunders, and Marien Swezey.
KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA--This sorority was organized some years ago, so we are told, for the purpose of taking in young ladies whose tendencies were towards exclusiveness and society. Any Kappa will state without hesitation that any man will do; however, some of the old standpatters are the most acceptable. Having looked over the records of the organization we learn that Bill Letton and "Mick" Romans are charter members, and Sam Waugh was the first to be "spiked." One of the traditions of this loyal sisterhood is that Dr. Louise Pound enables them to secure a P. B. K. each year.
DELTA GAMMA--In view of the fact that apparently no other sorority in the Greek world has yet been able to live up to the "10:30 closing laws," a charter some time ago was granted to a few closely united kindred spirits for the formation of a sorority to show the rest of "them" how this could be done, along with the keeping of many other inter-sorority council rules. They have always been noted for having the "COOLEST" Sorority house in

Lincoln on Sunday afternoons. also for gaining the fairy roles in the Senior plays. The most prominent members are Cornelia Lindsey, "Peanut" Hill, and "Jo" Sanford.
PI BETA PHI--First came into prominence on account of their new theories of celebrating funerals and breaking engagements (see Mariam Clark). Their ideas in regard to Freshmen coincide most heartily with that of the Betas. Motto: "'My kingdom for a man."
CHI OMEGAS--Formerly a high school sorority for the purpose of making a home for girls just out of the eighth grade. It was afterwards decided to make this sorority a college organization, and after transferring "all the little tots" from the high school to college, the problem is then solved as to their great number of small girls. Most famous members Bill Randall and Florence Hill.
ALPHA OMICRON PI--Considered just a trifle peculiar. Famous for having a party "any old time." which are very popular with all the men. One of their most famous Spikes is said to have been Lloyd Nichols, before the hiring eyes of Ruthie from around the corner of 13th and R caused him to come right over.
ALPHA PHIS--Organization formerly founded for furthering the science of getting dates. The main qualifications for becoming a member of this society have always been lots of nerve, a pretty face, and ability to throw the slush. Probably the most famous member is Marie Douglas, who is classed with Bryan as far as presidential aspirations are concerned. Only sorority (at Nebraska) that owns its own house, regardless of the fact that Guy Reed thinks he owns it.
DELTA DELTA DELTA--Charter first granted as an exclusive Senior organization. However, they have changed their policy somewhat, and now condescend to take a Junior, or even a Sophomore, and on rare occasions a Freshman every three or four years. Like all other sororities it has its famous members. A few of these are Frank Tipton, Johnnie Baird, and Rex Fuller.
ALPHA CHI OMEGA--It has long been a tradition of this loyal sisterhood that it is the only organization (at Nebraska) that actually owns a baby grand; the aforesaid, we learn, is being bought on the instalment plan. The last payment will be made in June of the year 1919. The most talked of members are Dale Boyles, and Verna Hyder. Harold Noble in memoriam.
DELTA ZETA--Famous for having caused the well-known feud between themselves and the Delta Gammas when they held a "hop" in their part of the double house which occupied by the two sororities in question. In regard to their social standing we refer you to Si Bryan's dad, who, it is said, was invited to their party recently. (They thought it was Si at the phone) In the year 1912 they attempted a formal party which might have been worse. They are young yet and have plenty of time to learn.
