AMES CEMETERY

Ames Cemetery, located south of Sweet Home on Hwy. 288, going south towards Holley. It was established in 1863, and is in Township 13S Range 1W, Section 36. This is a very small cemetery, located in a grove of oak trees, very well tended. SSA means same stone as previous. Surveyed 10 October, 1999, by Jan Phillips. Tombstones found on the DAR survey indicated by *.


Like many other families who travelled west in the early 1850s, the Ames family left Missouri in the pursuit of religious freedom. They ended their journey in September of 1852 near a creek now called Ames Creek, in what is now called Sweet Home.

The 1860 Linn County census, Lebanon post office, shows the Ames family in house 585:

Two houses later, Alonzo Ames is listed, age 39, farmer, b. OH and in the household is day laborer Henry Kummer, 23, b. MA.

In 1870, Sweet Home District, Alanzo Ames is listed as being 78, b. in OH, DLC 5091. Lowell Ames, Jr., is listed in house 25, age 44, b. OH, working on a farm, DLC 5072. In the house is Polly, his sister, age 49, b. OH; and Joseph F., age 30, b. in IL, working on the farm.
